I remember reading somewhere that he was using a bogner uberchall
He used an uber quite a bit on the Strays album I think. I saw at least one live tv performance where he played with a couple on stage. Besides that brief stint, it's been a 900.

As far as being one of the most creative and interesting songwriters for alternative rock, he definitely rules.

He's a cheeseball, not that great a guitar player and i'm def. not salivating over his tone.

This! Dude is a below average player, imo.

Is always good in the live stuff ive seen.ive never actually seen them, but the DVDs and live CDs are great. I Just watched the newest DVD and again the tone is great. Pretty sure he uses a jcm900. With a bunch of Boss pedals and a PRS. It works.

You have Phobia as your avatar, that's awesome. As for Dave Navarro, dude needs to do more playing and less cheesedink show hosting.

Yes, i love Phobia. Favorite grindcore band ever!!

I totally avoid his tv shows. Ive watched yt vids of him interviewing. Not so great at that either.

Saw Navarro with JA about 2 months ago... his live tone was absolutely incredible... the fucker can play too... every single note was perfect and full... it damn near sounded like his guitar was just a backing track... man is definitely talented and has a killer live tone...

Navarro is not a "shredder" , so to judge him on that is not really a appropriate spot to put him in. As far as being one of the most creative and interesting songwriters for alternative rock, he definitely rules. and his Jcm is heavily modded fyi.

He's never been considered a "shredder" but I think JA constricted him as a player. You can listen to some of his JA solos and hear some serious shred worthy licks in there. I saw a video of his from the JA hayday where he played a solo with the band jamming a riff behind him and I was like holy shit he can play, it was delay heavy but he was tearing up some really nice runs and legato stuff. I looked everywhere for it so I could post it here but I couldnt find it. It was years ago on some MTV thing.

This topic made me recall those spread TV things he did with a few famous players like Mustaine and Lynch etc where he would sit around and talk guitar and jam a little. Those were kinda cool.

I wouldn't say that the guys in janes constricted him but would say that they did ask him to tone down a little on the shred type licks because with that band and that scene , shred isn't what they were going for, hence the word alternative. They wanted something different then the metal scene that in some cases had become cheesy. They were shooting for creating as a band as a whole instead of just a guitar band.

He was definitely a solid player in his prime. I think he was much better than his playing showed being that (in my opinion) Jane's Addiction is/was pretty crappy. You can hear brief moments of his skill at times but not often. I would have liked to have heard him in something shreddier in the 90's. I don't think he's kept up much with a practice routine. More so just maintain the JA setlist and that's it.

I think with a lot of players, after u "make it". The schedule is more demanding and theres less time to "improve their playing". Plus hes a known drug addict. And Janes has had a very sporadic career. I would guess when there is a tour coming up hes kammin that setlist and not worried about anything else technique wise.

Something about his playing just "hit me" once. And it always kept me interested.
