Wait, did you ask your liberal buddies at the SD forums what pickups they think you should try? It might be a good place to start

nah i created a topic over at the racer x forum that ayrton usually hangs around. those guys know more about paul gilbert and bruce than i ever will. besides, why would i want to mention dimarzio pickup/paul gilbert references with SD? i would get flamed beyond recognition

Nah, there are actually some good DiMarzio threads on the Duncan forum. :D

FWIW, I convinced myself for a long time that I liked PAF Pros, but I really don't. They are slightly dark in the neck, but without that awesome turkey gobble. They're just kinda boring and blah to my ears. I've owned MANY just b/c Satch, Vai, Gilbert, etc.

The Breed neck, OTOH just pwns in both positions.

LOL! No shit. They despise you if you can actually play guitar. If you play faster than eighth notes, you're a wanker. If you listen to Paul Gilbert or Yngwie Malmsteen you're a wanker wannabe. If you even mention that you like a shredder or metal band, you have to also mention that you kind of like John Mayer to avoid getting flamed. If you aren't pro-Obama or anti-Bush, you have no future at SD.

Yeah, it's much safer here. Ayrton is smart to seek Dimarzio advice here.

Honestly though, there are three Seymour Duncan pickups that I like: Custom Custom, PATB 1 and Full Shred; however, none of them do I like more than a Dimarsio PAF Pro or Super Distortion.

They do have a STK 6 now that looks promising, but I seriously doubt it can top a Dimarzio Virtual Solo so I'm not holding out any hope.

For Ayerton's guitar though, I think a PAF Pro/Air Norton combo would be a perfect choice for that guitar. It is said that Dimarzio and Ibanez are a perfect harmony, however, Dimarzios are way more versatile than that. I've tried them in Les Pauls and strats with incredible results.

Oops, typed the wrong name... my bad. LOL

I ran my pickups in parallel for years. Parallel has its place, but it's thin and twang with a clang type tone. Some bandmates complained about it being too thin for some of the tunes we covered.
Running humbuckers in series is ideal. And the main thing is to use lower output pickups to get that twangy type sound, but yet retain the full series wiring tone.
My first DiMarzio was a Dual Sound that I got when I was 16. It had the push/pull switch for series/parallel. That is a great mod to have if you like both tones.
But even running a Tone Zone in parallel got old, real quick.
Series is the right choice between the two.

Since someone bumped this very ancient post, @glpg80 Are you still a dimarzio guy? I have never thought to ask you what pickup you use for the abbadon videos

Very much a dimarzio guy and still rocking dimarzio type pickups.

The pickup that’s in Abaddon videos I made over 20 years ago now. It’s a ceramic magnet tonezone knockoff repotted with yankee candle wax. The exact knockoff winding you can’t buy anymore and the ceramic magnet can’t be bought off the shelf. It has to be pilfered from another pickup.

I pulled the wire out of the neck pickup I mentioned in the OP by accident changing pickups in a guitar about 15 years ago. I never found a suitable replacement which is why my charvel is still a single humbucker guitar even today.

it’s capable of 2.6Vpp output on chugs though 😎

Let's be honest...single humbucker is really all we need.

Some guitars just have single humbucker attitude. Other guitars have neck pickup attitude. You really know which is which after many years of playing guitars. This charvel was always a riff machine. I originally bought it to take to gigs that were in super sketch places to keep from dragging the expensive custom stuff out. I played it so much that it’s my go to and what I use to tune amps. I just know what to expect with that guitar.

I'm old. I tried to look up your band, but damn, there's a lot of bands with that name! https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/abaddon

Is there a YouTube page I can check out?

I know this is a bit offtopic, but i love looking at the posts from the beginning of rig-talk, and people had like pics of their IDs or something as profile pics or signatures. What is the story with that?

That sounds badass!!!!!!

That’s the low gain setting - both at half or less.

I am going to need you to go ahead and send me that amp for inspection

Just finished a circuit modification to make it even bigger sounding while still staying tight. I’m over here in my basement like:
