In his humbucker loaded Strats he has a Seymour Duncan Holdsworth humbucker in the bridge, which is a custom shop pickup. In the neck position of the Gold Strat its a Duncan Lil 59, and in the Black Strat it's the stock Fender Noiseless singlecoils.

In the old '68 Strat he plays on the Electrolesson DVD, the neck and middle singlecoils were custom wound by John Suhr. The bridge singlecoil was a custom shop Seymour Duncan Classic Stack, wound a little hotter and fatter sounding. It was known as a 'Mojo Stack'

Hope this helps!

Bump for this. Those are just regular Fender Noisless? I thought they were Duncan Classic Stacks.

Yes they are just stock Fender Noiseless singles in the neck/middle positions on that black strat. I asked Doug a while back and that's what he told me

I had those in my 95 strat. Dont know what happened to them though. Must have done something stupid with them. I have an HS3 though but the virtual vintage blues 402 blows it away. Im going to put one of those in the bridge slot as well.

Thanks, very cool info here.

I tried the YJM and HS3 in the neck, i thought they were OK but id wouldnt buy em again.

I have some SCN on my CS Strat now, i think they are good for mid-gain, but i not for higher gain stuff and those Duncan Vintage Hot Stacks are really tempting...

I have to tell ya, for me, the best strat pickups for hard rock to Metal are the Yngwie pickups; HS-3 in the bridge and YJM's in the neck and middle. They sound incredible wth any level of gain, theyre quiet and articulate, still retain Strat single coild charateristics IMO and theyre noisless. I have 2 Yngwie clones that Im building( They would have been finished months ago if I wasnt so dang busy) and I can wait for them. That is far and away my favorite strat..

I tried the Malmsteen neck pickup and thought it was horrible, and very very low output too

Do you, by any chance, know what mics he's using in his Teles? Thanks a lot.

They are ok if you have a ton of gain on tap or are running a boosted marshall balls out but kind of fall flat for anything else IMO. The dimarzio VVs sound better clean to me and have a little bit more to push an amp. They are definitely more single coil like than the hs3 and they still hold up great with gain. The HS-3 sounds better to me running as a single, it has more output, a more natural high end and it is still pretty quiet.

The VV solo is pretty cool for a strat bridge, has a good bit of output. I haven't tried the new SDs but the old ones are some of the worst stacks I have had.

How close does the Suhr Aldrich pickup come to that tone in a strat?

That guitar has an SD Holdsworth in it. Why not just get one of those?

Man, that guitar is so nice! I actually got to try it out back in the days when we opened for DIO on the Scandinavian part of the Killing the dragon tour. Doug did some amazing playing on that tour!

Because the Holdsworth is a custom shop pickup... making it more expensive than the Suhr Aldrich. Plus I've been wanting too try an Aldrich.

How similar is his signature pickup to the Holdsworth?

Don't know. The Holdsworth is basically an Alnico 2 JB with two screw coils.

Old thread but his pick-up has much more output...

Which is a shop floor custom, and only cost about $15 more than a regular production pup.

Just find a dealer that will order one for you. Chub maybe?

Actually it costs considerably more...the made a production version of that pickup with the wrong values but the custom shop one goes for 160 or so

I had the production one and hated it. Way too smooth and compressed for rythmns, but single notes riffs and leads sounded great with it.
