Are the M68 MXR Univibe pedals any good?

I had a Fulltone Univibe years ago and I'm getting the itch for a decent Univibe pedal again. That Doug Aldrich video with him using one and it sounded pretty good to my ears.

The Fulltone was decent too......better than the MXR.
I had planned on splurging in the late 90's for a Fulltone but when I tested it my Dunlop UV-1 was every bit as good. Someone told me that the photocells are no longer available so Dunlop doesn't service them any longer.

Decent, unless you're really seeking a real-deal clone.

Yep it's decent for a non bulb vibe. If I'm not mistaken Luke has one on his board as well. Just be careful OP, the vibe rabbit hole is a real thing.

I had alot of fun and spent alot of money down the hole. Personally if you want something that is authentic but affordable, get the Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe. The stock Micro has a real bulb and is alot more chewy, thumpy and swirly than the MXR.

Ultimately after going through alot of high end units (Sir Henry, Shin-E Vibe 2, Dry Bell Vibe Machine etc...) I ended up with three that I love - Kingtone 1969, Formula B Vintage Vibe MkII and a modded by JHS Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe. Whatever JSH did to my Micro Vibe I don't know but it can hang. I switch between those on my current board. Granted tone, vibe feel, board space, power requirements were ultimately what I based things on. The big vibes like the Henry and Shin-E are incredible units but they are big and I didn't get on with how you power them. It's why I never bought what is considered one of the best around in the R Weaver stuff. It was fun though.

I think theyre decent and would probably buy if i needed another.

I went with the EQ devices the depths.

Has way more wobble than i need but dials back nice.

They were discontinued last year but you can find them easy enough

Photocells are still available, you have a ton of makers out using them from Shin-E, Sabbadius, R Weaver, Kingtone etc... Even the Voodoo Lab Micro uses them.

I agree with @CarlF, the old big silver MXR vibe sounded good so not sure why they couldn't build their new pedal around the bulb. Drybell's Vibe Machine is the same size as the MXR and it uses a real bulb.

I love MXR pedals but sometimes they make some weird decisions like their Micro Flanger, go ahead and put all the controls on there, PastFX does it. Or same with the Micro Chorus, just add the rest of the controls because they are good sounding units. On their Uni Vibe pedal, Drybell has the build, why not add it plus, they actually own the name Uni Vibe so that makes it even more legit. They would have sold alot more of them.

I went with the Fulltone years ago on the concensus on what was the best on the market and I was a bit underwhelmed with the pricepoint.

I think this time around I'm looking for something that sounds good/does the job without getting back down the crazy BEST OF THE BEST rabbit hole again which is why the MXR caught my attention on the Aldrich video since he could use any vibe out there yet he is using the MXR M68. It won't bother me if it isn't a 100% clone or uses photocells.

Like many of you I used to be a vibe whore but what paused the search for me is the Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe. The OG hiding in plain sight. My favorites outside of the Roger Mayer is the first edition Sweet Sound Ultra Vibe, Dry Bell V2 and 1968 King Tone.

An awesome Vibe by R. Weaver

Best one I've had, out of many. Fulltone (x2), Sweet Sound, Lovepedal, Danelectro...
Midnight Vibe is $$$, and not the most pedalboard friendly. But it sounds amazing.
Kick it on around 1:08 in this clip, can really hear it at 2:20:

Really want to try a Sabbadius. Heard it live several times, and its killer.

Settled on a Dunlop Rotovibe. It's not the best. Tone sucker, somewhere between a vibe and a phaser. But I dig it. It doesn't take over your sound as much as the more genuine vibes.

It’s a decent introduction to vibes and on the more affordable side.

It is definitely one that if you like it, just use it and stay out of that rabbit hole, it’s not as deep of a hole as vintage style fuzz, but you can easily get lost in it.
