Effects of taking off preamp tube covers?

The covers are very important due to the fact that they keep all of the tone inside of the preamp tubes. If you remove them, the tone disappears and you lose all of your fragile harmonics.

well damn.... Never saw the thread before till now. my bad....

literally just hear someone talking about today in a store. just thought id see what was up.

Brad please delete this! haha. Didnt no what I was gonna start here. if I did wouldnt have done it!

I find that if I eat Pizza Hut wings then fart within 10 feet of my amp it tightens up the low end......

They will make your amp squeel like a pig when turned up with gain so any tonal goodness you may have otherwise gotten from taking the covers off will now be microphonic squeeling. The coves are called shields for a reason.
Changing just the V1 tube has much more of a tonal effect.

Nope. It sounds like it compared to your loose low end.

That's how you achieve the brown sound.

Sounds like you have a pickup problem.  My CCV doesn't have any covers and I can stand in front of it cranked with no squeal or feedback :D
That's why I ordered one Dave. How did you know   Do you you use a gate in front?

No, you misheard your band mates. They're telling you that YOU need to tighten up your low end!

I never use a noise gate. I hate them. I use what everyone claims is the best, an ISP decimator, and I hear a tone change.
How do you control preamp hiss? A gate in the loop works for it also. Do you hear tone suck with that? How do you control feedback? I know you play with a good dose of gain.
