Emg height….

Just did 3mm on two guitars. Have not tried them yet but let me say first that I had these fuckers all outta whack… curious to see if any of you crackers have a particular go to distance on yours? My Sykes has og 81,85 set up and my sg has an og 81 that my brother hooked me up with…. I pulled my 24v mod out of my Sykes when I installed the 81 in the sg and used it because I didn’t have any 9 volts. It ripped. Installed a regular 9 volt and hell it still sounds good…

Also the 81 on the sg while being even with the pickguard has a helluva cant to the strings. Is that an issue you think?
I did 3mm from the bottom of the strings to the part of the pup where the lugs would be on a regular pup….

Yep, mine were about 8 feet from the trash can where they needed to be the entire time.

Love the SA’s but I cannot do EMG humbuckers ever again.

When I put the Mojotone Hellbenders in to replace them I set the neck pickup’s height by sustaining a note on the 15th fret of the B-string and I just kept raising the pickup until the note sustained as long as I deemed “appropriate”, then for the bridge I basically whacked the shit out of the strings and set it right before it pushed my Plexi into mush territory w/ the volume on 4.

with emgs you can get super close without it sounding fucked up

I generally did a little further away like 4-5mm though

Yeah 24v is really helpful.

I will also say EMGs have been very variable for me. I just sort of blundered into a Kelly with and 81/60 setup, and it sounds WAY better than the last time I had an 81. And to be perfectly honest I'm not sure why. They're very new production. Maybe it's the wiring harness? But there doesn't seem to be anything special. The middle position for cleans is also much better than expected. Less splat than a lot of EMGs too, but I'm still using 24v.

Press down on the strings on the 22nd fret, then raise the pups almost all the way to the strings.

My experience with EMG humbuckers has been to make them as high as possible without the strings touching them.

I adjust the height a little bit below the point where i don't scratch the Pickups with the Strings while chugging by eye. On my current Guitar the Pickup worls itself down a little from that point through vibration until it settles and now that's the height.

Yeah people say all sorts of things. I think mostly with respect to the change in resonant peak that happened somewhere along the way for reasons I don't fully understand.

But these seem to be unusually good pickups, or at least unusually suited to the guitar. I'm less happy with the 57/66TW set in my other stage Kelly - it's been kind of a struggle.
