Emg install help

I have a jack, the mid range booster pot, an og 81 from the late 80’s that my bro hooked me up with…. Plus the 9 volt hook up kit. Was going to install it in my sg. Just to try it out. Basically one pup, one knob, battery and jack. Will this work with the mid range booster pot only?

I will surf around online a bit to see how folks are merging the OG solder style pickups with the new 'press-on' EMG wiring harness. If you have the correct plug ends soldered onto the leads from the older 81 pickup, EMG has diagrams for 'most' install configurations. I am 99% sure you can use the Mid-Range Booster alone with only a volume control and jack / no tone controls. That's how I had a set of singles set up on one of my strats: Jack / Volume / SPC pot.

It should, yep. You won't be able to turn the pickup down, you'll only be able to dial between "full open EMG 81" and "full open EMG 81 plus a mid boost" but it should work. All pickups always output at full volume. All a volume pot does is turn it down.

You will need to find a way to connect the pickup to the mid boost. If it were me, I'd solder a harness to the pickup. Get a few connector wires from EMG with the harnesses, then cut off one end and solder that end and the pickup wires together.

Yes it will work, but all guitars into valve amps sound best when you set up full gain with the correct volume pot set no higher than 8. Humbuckers generally require a tone-control set to 7.
EMG mid-range is usually last in the chain, after the volume pot. But you can modify that, if you want it only on one pick-up say.
eBay sellers have little 24V battery solutions, which are slightly more compact than a regular battery.
