There is the possibility that Joe digs exactly what he's recording so I'm careful to judge the motive but nonetheless, I agree that the end product is very much a remake of something that occurred two decades ago whether intentionally or because it's just what Joe wants to do.
And yeah, Pat's got a way with words in fact, I need to find me a Vai video to post because I'm up for some Mentone-isms.

I'm confused. Are you agreeing or disagreeing? Is the problem with the word "remake?" I can come up with better terms. Really, I can do it.

The simple fact of the matter is that I am going to buy Joe's new release. This song they posted today has some cool things about it. But where I question motive is that the Seattle thing really didn't hit until Joe was about 30 years old. Everyone is different for sure and it is possible that finally at 30 years of age, he discovered a musical style that really, finally appealed to him and what he had based his guitar playing life on beforehand was something he was never really into. Doubtful and unlikely, but possible. Most people's musical loves are formed from junior high through college age. And you don't get as good as Joe is by not being deeply into what you are playing and dedicating your life to practicing to achieve it.
Part of my disappointment with this is that for YEARS I have been looking forward to this album, because I was told it had a heavy Deep Purple influence but sounded modern. That it sounded like Deep Purple with a heavier guitar tone and more crazy guitar playing. Now I imagine that sound in my head....... and in my head I get very excited at the prospect of what this could sound like. I didn't realize that:
Deep Purple + heavier tone + crazier guitar playing = Soundgarden/Alice In Chains.
Because in my mind it doesn't. Soundgarden/Alice In Chains = Soundgarden/Alice In Chains.
Why try and hide what the band sounds like by describing it as this cool Deep Purple throwback thing when it's just a throwback to Seattle 1993? It reminds me of Yngwie making this big deal about how into Hendrix/Blackmore he was as if he was trying to get us to not pull back the curtain to find his collection of Uli Roth era Scorpions records and Uli solo albums, because then we'd go, "dang Yngwie, you sound just like Uli Roth."

Jeff, that singer is copping more than a "vibe." He's good but when you emulate your idols to the tee it's not nearly as great as if you just kept some of their vibe and did your own thing.
I don't have a band nor do I want one, nor do I need one to give my opinion.

I want to hear Joe Holmes sound like freaking Joe Holmes, playing the music he grew up on. It's weird that he recognizes the Seattle grunge thing killed the sounds that he grew up on, but he doesn't know the Seattle grunge thing died a few short years after that? Like others have said, it sounds like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, twenty years too late.![]()
