Fortin 33, VFE Focus, and VFE Rocket out for delivery today. I am weak and I ordered a VFE Dragon as well, hopefully will arrive later this week.

Hoping not to end up keeping all of these.

Biased answer but I really like the Hiwatt Super-Hi 50. It has absolutely crushing modern high-gain sounds. And because it has a switchable 4th gain stage, you can set up one channel for low gain (or even cleans) with 3 gain stages and the other channel for modern high gain with 4 gain stages. And because the amp is based on the Hiwatt DR504, it can still get those classic rock sounds Hiwatt (and Marshall) are known for.

As long as you don't need an FX loop, it's a great amp. The loop absolutely is the weak link in this amp. It's incredibly noisy.

Yeah, I've been looking at that amp. It's just at that price I might as well have one amp for classic Marshall tones and a separate METAL amp like a boosted Recto or something. I'm starting to think that if I can't get good modern metal tones out of one of these Rectos or a 5150, the problem is not the amp.

33/Grind just does one thing: HPF @ 1khz, 3db/octave. You can dial in the Focus to do that.

Focus/Standout drop 6 db minimum, I think? And doesn't the Grind also boost high end? I think the Focus/Standout can only cut (though I suppose they can boost everything in the middle that isn't getting cut).

Not really, it's just that they are cutting so much bass so it sounds like they are boosting the treble.

Set the Focus at 6db/octave and bring back some dry signal with the blend knob should get you close to a 3db/octave cut.

godgringer is right on: the VFE Focus can pretty much sound just like the 33.

So the VFE Rocket is a cool pedal that would have a lot of uses, but it's not best suited for this.

The 33 sounds cool; not as extreme as I was expecting. Works well.

The Focus is very flexible. It can sound very much like the 33. It also can be made to sound pretty similar to an OD808, but clearer with more snarl. LOTS of snarl.

I kinda prefer the old 808 because it sounds "juicier," but it's not nearly as clear as the Focus.

Focus is a nice pedal. Seems perfect for what I needed.

So is the amp quest thirsty quenched?

Hope so. The 1959 sounds pretty great. The Focus seems like the winner. Probably will use the 808 most of the time but click to the Focus for passages that use the 8th string a lot.

If you like the Focus but want more "juice" (which I assume is clipping) I think you'll like the Dragon.

It's the extra clipping that muddies up the really low tuned F# string, so I think I'm good without the snarl from the Focus. It serves its purpose.

I had ordered a Dragon but apparently the pedal is "broken" so i was refunded :/ I really don't enjoy hunting unobtainable stuff so I'd rather just be done.

Maybe turning into a 33 fan boi. Really like that pedal. The VFE Focus can pretty much do the same thing, but going back and forth between them, there always seems to be a subtle difference, and I really do like the 33. I think most people would much prefer the VFE Focus since it's much more flexible and it can let in a lot more bass than the 33. The 33 only really sounds good with the knob around 1 or 2 o'clock and does only that one thing, but it just happens that the one thing it was designed for is exactly what I wanted.
