Fryette Pittbull Ultralead II

Looks like he's come full circle.. The first Deliverance's had no FX Loop because he wanted it to be pure. And now the UL has a Display.. LOL

I have an OG D120 with a Choke Filter.. It's raw and dynamic. It's mine.. LOL

To be totally fair to Fryette, the difference between the stripped down Deliverance and the fancy bells and whistles of the UL doesn’t represent philosophical incongruity or a sudden shift in priorities for the guy.

Steve has talked about how the specific reason the Deliverance exists is because he got the impression that people thought VHT/Fryette stuff “needed” all the bells and whistles and buttons they usually have just to sound good. The Deliverance was his attempt at building an amp that represented in his words, “the core Fryette sound with zero extra bells or whistles,” to try and show people that Fryette stuff does not actually need all the extra stuff.

I am the biggest single channel simple circuit proponent that I know, and if he made a single channel Ultra without a bunch of digital junk and an all analogue path, I would probably be in line to buy the damn thing.

If I were a simple path guy and was building amps, why would I then go to a digital rack? To give the market what it wants? Why not give the market what it is asking from you? I wish we could see how many sells he gets off this. I wish him the best. But it is the opposite direction I think any fans of his amp line would want.

It's definitely made for Gen Sally..
Wood Cabinets and Big Iron are to heavy for the Phone it in Generation..

Totally agree. I would love to try a faithful remake of the OG Ultra Lead, but I also have zero interest in this new UL with its rack form factor, built-in LCD screen, stuff that requires menu diving to tweak.

Honestly, I think he mentioned one time that he could make an amazing Solid State amp. I would love to play his take on a high gain solid state analog circuit before I would buy a digital rack unit

I really feel bad for shitting all over this. Steve is a great guy, and he is very willing to give out help. I asked him about another circuit (soldano) and he looked at it and gave me advice. Had nothing to do with him, and honestly, I think I must have been pretty blitzed to even bother him with it.

It is just that this hits so out of left field. I have been a fan of everything he has done until this. Perhaps though I absolutely hate digital shit, I will just wait and see how the thing sounds.

Switch-mode power supplies are (generally) smaller, lighter, easier to manufacture and cheaper. None of this necessarily equates to inferiority, but it can. Steve is probably on top off it.

As an aside, the lack of real punch in both the Synergy 5050 and Fryette LX II compact power amps have turned me off these sorts of designs to some extent. Maybe he's cracked the code this time round, time will tell.
The synergy and lx aren't switch mode power supplies they have power transformers. It will be interesting to see how this actually is in reality, don't think I've seen a tube amp with a switched psu before.

That PG video though, the controls not working doesn't look great though. I hate touch screens on computers but on this a touch display actually would be so much better.

All the Fryette talk got me to plug into my gp/di > 2/50/2 again, not used it in a while. Still a great sound. Love the Pittbull mode with an eq as a boost.

I’ve been thinking more about this amp and adding lots of digital complication, presets, screens, etc, even with tubes I think something like this positions itself to compete with things like an axe FX. And those who prioritise versatility over anything else will, these days, probably go with the modeler as it’s always gonna be more versatile than a tube amp. And in this case also cheaper and lighter.

Agreed, if there's going to be display then don't fight the fact that it's 2026 - just make it a touch device.

Another video on a different channel. Mostly the same info, but said differently.

Two things of interest: One, Steve explicitly says he wasn't trying to give the players what they say they want, but what he thinks will enable the current gigging/touring musicians. Two, he mentions the 7k price point again, but here it seems like he might have meant that if he made the UL II the old way but still with all the new features then it would have been a 7k amp. Not that a 1:1 remake would have been 7k.

It almost seems like a bunch of people have bitched about this to him, because he seems apologistic and to be making the excuse for why he made this this way the whole time...Poor guy

It is odd to introduce an amp that way, telling people why he didn't make what they wanted, or what his reason for this was-instead of just introducing the amp like it is something good

If it was something good he would introduce it as such :hys:

I keed i keed

I'm sure it will probably sound great for the 5 years of it's service life before it's planned obsolescence kicks in and no one can repair it and it becomes another digital pile of junk in a landfill

I keed I keed...kinda

Wow - that looks pretty bad ass, not to mention the form factor - hope the tubes stay cool enough

To me an OG UL is a 1992 model. By the mid-late 90’s they got a little more tame. Less balls, not as raunchy, the usual adjectives apply here.
