Fryette Sig:X = One of the best amps ever built. IMHO

Great sounding amp, no doubt but I don't know about best amp ever built. Mine suffered from the dreaded "pop" when switching channels. Ended up selling it and keeping my Mark III. Like you said, we all like different things.

That is typically a bad preamp tube. Mine did that at one point and I talked to Steve about it. Ended up being a bad preamp tube.

Been playing a lot the last few weeks .... several hours everyday. The amp I have been using is my Sig X. Found a few new sounds last night I am very happy with....even after having this amp since it came out I find new things it can do.

Bogner 212 with Vintage 30s
Stone Age with G12K-100s
Splawn 412 with Creambacks and Lynchbacks
THD 212 with THD Eminence speakers.

Did you try the Sig X with all of these cabs & what did you think ?

Been spending a lot of time the last week trying to get the best vintage and modified English crunch sound out of my Sig X I can. As well as trying to get the lead channel to sound as much like a Mesa Mark amp as I can.

A few months ago Steve Fryette suggested that I use each of the 3 channels alone for everything (with & without pedals) for a month each. All clean / point of break up/ distorted sounds. I kind of have been doing this .... it has been very much a learning experience.

First thing I noticed was no matter what channel I use I tend to set up a very similar clean sound. Pretty much a Fender Twin blackface scooped tone (the blackface Fenders in general have a scooped sound no matter how you set them up). I set up all three channels on my Sig X separate for clean & could barely tell the difference in sound when I compared them.

So many people will say VHT's sound bad with V30's. I disagree. Not only have I tried it myself, but that is exactly the setup John Christ of Danzig used (BCRich with PRS pickups into VHT Pitbull into v30 loaded Marshall cabs).. His tone was great.

I agree with this, I like the VHT speakers better with them but they can sound good with other cabs, John's tone was great to my ears.

I used my SigX into a Marshall cab, loaded with v30's and celestion lead 80's in an x pattern. It sounded awesome! Man I miss that amp! I also had Shuguang KT88's in mine. It was killer!

Mine sounds pretty awesome with v30's. But then again i havent heard it with anything else.

Have had time to play to play my new to me Sig X this weekend and it is KILLER. I like the lead channel best so far and for the price they go used I'd buy one just for the lead channel. Works really good thru my Splawn 4x12 slant with greenbacks.

Trick is, the UL sounds great with V30's when you leave the Shift button pressed out and keep the Mids at noon and Presence dial high.

On that subject, does anyone here have any comments on different power tube options for the SigX? Mine has the stock Sovteks, and I wouldn't mind a little less bottom-end compression out of the power section.

This was using my Gibson LPDC with JB in bridge(works fine with others). I use the neck pickup with the first setting usually. I also use my pickup selector and volume on my guitar often. The cab is a 80's Mars 4x12 with Greenbacks on top & V30 on bottom.

BUMP, Richedie was right, the Sig X is a seriously good amp, maybe not the best ever built but OMFG this thing sounds killer...just rediculously good. Thing can get just brutal if needed as well. And not nearly as dry as my Ultra Lead Much juicier Alot of the dryness from the Ultra Lead must be the power amp as when you switch off the power amp switch and run the send into the return on the Sig X, the previously dry (I kinda like it dry) Ultra Lead mysteriously gets wet, wet, Juicy Neither are going anywhere.

Does your UL have KT88's? I'm running 6L6's in a non eq model. I don't find it that dry. The preamp isn't as saturated as say my 6505 is, but the power section still sounds nice and juicy when pushed. Not lots of breakup, but it's still warm and lively sounding.
