Gear just ain't moving eh?

I guess so. I'm among a lot of high tech corporate slaves, so I don't see the issue with the economy first hand. I figured, being it was tax season that stuff would move, as it usually does. Fuckers are holding on to their cash tight.

But most people I know are complete cheap fucks too. They'll wait 7 months to save $5 on a piece of gear.

Just like driving 20 miles outside of town to save .03 cents on a gallon of gas.
That savings cost them $8.00 to save $3.00
I pull into whatever gas station I see when I need it. People say I am crazy.

This is truths! Which means you have to be even more savvy about how your modding.

In a down market suddenly we're all cork sniffers.

I hear ya on that!

I think those "well it's 2.82 over at the shell on 1st, but 2.87 after 5 pm at the conoco on...." ad infinitum hilarious.

I mean I'm as jewish as the next guy with my money but gas? It's just something I gotta have...I figure it'll average out in the long run.

When some older wise soul broke it down for me.....
Said "Son your only saving ...MAYBE $2.00 on the overall total..."
It made me think about it. And I just started going to any station when I needed fuel.
Dont think twice. ;)
Sorta same with gear.......if I want it....I WILL HAVE IT!

I'm pretty cost conscious in most areas but I'm the same way you are with gear. If my switch flips there's no such thing as sticker shock.

Nah, you missed the first part of tax season by about a month. Late Feb/early March is when the first big wave of returns comes. The second part will be coming in a couple of weeks, when the people who filed last-minute get their refunds.

Seriously, I moved 2 amps a couple of weeks ago pretty quickly but I think that may have been a fluke. I've got a couple of things I'm selling now and they've gotten a few looks but nobody's breaking down doors to snap them up.

I don't wanna take too much of a beating but I sure would like to buy some new stuff. :D

Dude...your amps were a STEAL for anyone.
But if you wanna move it....thats almost the norm these days.

Yeah, I'd had those amps for a number of years (7 or 8) and I'd gotten them used so I was ok being a little "just take 'em" on the pricing. Plus I was anxious to pick up that Stealth which was also going for a pretty good price and I really felt I had to move quickly otherwise I'd wake up and it'd be gone. The gear I'm selling now is just so I can afford to pick up a few more things. I'd like to have the new stuff and will get it eventually whether or not the sales go through but I'm not in any kind of a hurry.

I've put 4 items up on RT to sell I. The last month, fairly priced, with wiggle room at that,,,,and the only hits on the posts have been my own Bumps. I think part of the problem here on RT is that the is a demographic of people on rig talk that is very narrow as far as what gear is cool or hip or whatever. Certain types of gear just doesn't sell here. Plain and simple. It's a lot of the same Charvels, jacksons, Les Paul's, Friedman, Rhodes, Mesa Marshall stuff. I take the best care of all my gear. Most guitars and amps I sell are mint, and look the same they did when I bought them new. It definitely hurts when you have to take the 40% hit on gear that is in tip top shape, but that is how things are now. So what have I changed? I no longer polish the shit out of everything all the time, or go thru the anal retentive behavior of trying to keep me shit in as new condish. If I'm gonna take a big hit selling my gear like this, I'm going to let it get some battle wounds, maybe a scratch here and there, nicks or dings. The difference I'll get in return for a mint guitar versus a few blems here and there isnt worth the time I put in to make sure my gear is tight and perfect. The old saying is,,as soon as you walk out the door with it, it's used,,,been many a time when a perfect guitar I have to sell gets sold for a song and I wish I had put a few more scratches on it instead of trying to keep the thing in mint condition. It's a totally weird way of thinking but..... It's used right?
I've sold 3 of the 4 items that sat here stagnant on RT within a week on Reverb. A little more expensive to sell there, but they sold.
In closing, selling hear on RigTalk just isn't what it used to be anymore. If your gear isn't moving, try another venue in which the audience is more mainstream and diverse. May cost a few more points but there's a much better chance that you'll sell your stuff IMHO.

Most people don't buy amps anymore. Why bother when you can buy a profile or wait for a free firmware revision.

Gear still moves.

Good gear at a good price.

I do see lots of gear on here for sale at 70% of what it costs at guitar center by regulars that seem to post for sale ads more than anything else. Like this place is their online distribution store.

But reasonably priced gear from regulars selling at a more realistic price? Yep. I have a half dozen guitars from here. Just bought a new Splawn amp after talking to Scott.

I would much rather buy used gear off RT from a regular. The problem is I sell very rarely and my spare room is about full...

True story

I kinda bit myself in the tuckus when I missed out on a Rhodes Gemini local (how often does that happen?), and then ordered one from kyle. Within a month of putting the down on it, they started popping up used...often. Even the one I REALLY wanted showed up, at about a grand less than the full pop I paid for my custom order. No biggie, really....I like doing business with kyle. I'll probably by a second one anyway as a spare farther down the line.

I do agree, lots of stuff is kinda just sitting stagnant in the classified. Most of the big money players already have tons of the stuff they want. I love Diezel amps, but I got the one I want. A vh4 for 2.2k maybe a steal, but I won't buy it. An ultra lead for 1200? What a deal! But I got one. As far as guitars go, I have been playing long enough that I am way particular.I have plenty of what I want, and nobody is gonna put up a guitar I have to have. Except a Ken Lawrence, and I can't spend that kinda money without placing an order for EXACTLY what I want.

I waited a couple of years for the recto I wanted. I waited 3 years for my dream amp to become available. I want an uberschall, but I can wait for the one I want...specifically from a seller I am familiar with, if not that then at an insane price. I recently got a $200 Marshall 8100 I waited for years to get from a best friend local to me. Way excited to get it, just to loan it to another bro who needed it. I have an sl-x that needs to be brought home, just so I can send it to mailman. I need to make a NADx4 thread for the new heads I have gotten, some of which I haven't even played yet. More money than time....

Well I could see if I was desperate, then I'd go much lower.

But when I put FIRM, it's to weed out people bothering me. At my job, I get about 1 email every 30 seconds. It's brutal. I don't want to deal with endless emails from knuckleheads.

I realize it's entry level. But these things are pretty fucking solid basses for the money. Throw some better pickups in that thing and you've got close to a MIM Fender quality bass IMO. But as I said, CL people don't think like that. The ones that acutally have the capacity to think.

I get people asking me to come pick them up, bring them to my place to check out the instrument. Seriously. That guy was 50 miles from me too. I told him sure. Round trip fare is $100

I get people that email me "hey man, got no car."

I'm at the point where I've weeded out all the losers in my life. If you're 30-40 and you've got no car, go fuck yourself I don't want to deal with you. Heh, I'm on a tear today. Got a work bonus and the gubmt stole 1/2 of it. Pretty pissed off.

Man, I wish the only thing I had to worry about was how much the government took out of my bonus check lol.
What everyone is saying is true, don't expect to get more out of it then what you paid, just because it's been modified.
Every now and then you'll get lucky, but that's the exception not the rule.

Also, I agree with you, people can be downright rude with you when trying to buy gear. I recently sold a piece of gear and the first offer I got through this site, was actually a decent offer, but the dude was such a douche. Very condescending, trying to make it sound like he was doing me a favor by buying my gear. I ended up selling it for close to the first offer price, but to a much nicer buyer.

Yep, I just sold a 2011 Custom Suhr Modern on Reverb and I was able to get what I gave for it brand new. I don't even bother listing here anymore. Nowadays, most people here just want to beat you down on the price and not give you fair market value. Because of that, it is a great place to buy from however.

I would argue that a lot of gear or Reverb is too ambitiously priced and that the problem with a lot of the items on RT , is that they are products with a higher initial price tag. Even when brought down, they are out of reach for a lot of us. Then add to the fact that many of us have amps we already don't play so why buy another to not play. If you are looking for a fair price on a particular amp and have cash in hand, this place has a lot of selections and availability. I would also suggest that trying to sell 7 string guitars might prove a tougher sale here due to musical taste and interests..

I think a lot of the problem selling here is the 50 post minimum before you can respond to the seller! This is what happened to me when I first joined.

I joined this forum initially to buy something from the classifieds but quickly realized that I couldn't.

You have to have 50 posts to reply to the ads.

You have to have 50 posts to send a PM.

So even though I was interested I COULDN'T purchase the item because there was NO way to contact the seller and by the time I had 50 posts I had already bought it somewhere else.

I understand the reasoning behind the minimum post count but you should at the least be able to pm someone trying to sell an item you want to purchase. It's good for both parties that way..

I just wish guys would figure out that an amp that you bought last week isn't worth much more than one that's a-year-old. And neither are worth 100 bucks off of new. Sorry to say, used is used. And I don't care what upgrades you made to your guitar it's usually not worth much more than if it were stock.
