You will certainly find the JVM to be less polished / produced than the Friedman and I am a former DSL owner that boosted it on occasion as well; I prefer the JVM410H for that hot-rodded style of Marshall tones as well. I don't agree that the JVM series presents as overly "sterile" or "artificial", but I do understand why some that are used to a vintage 70's or 80's Marshall head may find those amps to be a bit more gritty and organic sounding. As I have written previously in my review of this amp: If you are a hardcore Plexi, JCM800, or Jose Mod purist...Then buy those amps. But, if you want a Marshall head that covers 80% of what all those amps do and also has a very good dedicated clean, then the JVM410H is going to be tough to beat.I've been on the fence for a while, but I have wanted to try one at least. I had a DSL100 for a long time that served me well. I figured if I can't get some good Marshall tones from this 4 channel amp, then something's wrong with me. Only thing I don't like is that it's almost 50 lbs. Any 100 watt head seems to weight about 47 lbs at least it seems. I really want a 50 watt Marshall, but the JVM205 is missing what many call the best gain channel. JVM seems to draw a lot of strong opinions though -- some say it's very artificial sounding, some say it's very much like previous Marshalls.
There's just something about my BE50 that doesn't quite do the Marshall thing like I remember it with the DSL100. I was using an SD1 with that amp, and it was magical with that combo. Strange thing is, I just recently played a DSL100 (new one) at GC, and it was super muddy. I tried 5 different guitars and it was just different flavors of mud. I don't remember my DSL sounding like in the past.
My Mark IV is not going anywhere. Every time I plug in to that amp, it's such a pleasure to experience.
Hit me up if you do, I have 4 sitting in boxes.I don't know...maybe like to look for a quad of 16 ohm K100s.
