It's not cool. Sorry to read about this. I'm a lucky guy, I've got several LPs and LPCs and they're all outstanding guitars. If the LPC route's not giving you what you want, maybe check out their straight up reissues like a '59 or even (one of my personal faves) a '57 GoldTop.

Just sayin',
Mo

The 59 reissues are shitboxes or people would not be going to small builders to get a good clone of them.

any chance you could get a discount or partial refund on gibson's tab? then just have local guy touch it up? personally I've never really minded a couple of small flaws as long as the guitar feels and sounds great, but I've never paid that much money on one either.

Gibson weren't willing to pay for the repair since the damaged area can't be seen when the pickguard is attached. Some of those dents had gone thru the lacquer so the re-lacquering would be quite a big process... The area which had dents looked like if someone had hammered the guitar with a screwdriver and that doesn't look good on a black guitar. :D

Ask the dealer to ask Gibson for a deep discount or Gibson is paying for the guitar to come back, George is right that you have the good sounding guitar so do not let the finish kill the deal.

Worth a try.

I'd be careful. Gibson might tell you it's relic'ed and bump the price up.

I bought a virtually new used flying V and when I took the pick-guard off to check the wiring and everything else, there were 3 screw holes in the completely wrong spot(without screws in them) for the upper portion of the pick-guard and one around the control cavity had chipped the wood into the cavity, rendering that screw strictly for aesthetic purposes. It's a great sounding guitar and nothing showing, so I'm not inclined to be pissed about it, but it certainly doesn't affect the guitar in a negative way that I really care about.

I say, pick your battles. Not saying you should compromise, but black LPs look better with pick-guards anyway.

I think Les Pauls should be offered with the pickguard as an option that the shop will install free if the buyer wants it on. Thankfully on my '03 Standard LE, the pickguard was never put on. I have it, but it would look horrible on the guitar.

Agreed, that pickguard sucks, location sucks, looks of it sucks, makes aggressive playing suck.....

it just sucks.

the QC on the newer gibson stuff is pretty terrible, not to mention the price for what you're getting

I had a similar experience in a shop where i tried out a bunch of various LPs, all the way up to a 3k euro custom,

There was maybe one traditional that played and sounded decent, but on nearly all of the ones i tried the control knobs were cracked on the inside (or had even just fallen off on some).

Apparantely from talking to one of the shop clerks, they had a supply issue whereby a huge shipment of vol/tone knobs shafts were maybe 1 or so mm off/too tight, but they screwed em on anywhere, resulting in the cracks or even some of them just falling off

i've seen much cheaper guitars with better QC, very disappointing, better off trying to find an older used gibson,

Hi Jaakko,

I also dislike (most) LPS with pickguards. I have 4 Customs who have these ugly as hell screwholes on the top and side. I always put a tiny small black screw into them, which looks ok . . .

Here's an example:

I can sense you're not a head-over-heels fanboi of some Gibson guitars

To the OP, if it's at all possible to get your funds back and return the guitar, I have referred several people from Europe to a dealer I know local to North America (US of A, actually) and people I know in France, Italy and Estonia have bought from these people. No problems, they're Les Paul fanatics and comb over each one before giving it their stamp of approval.

Jim & Janine at Route66 Classic Guitars!! Tell 'em Mo sent you and they'll take VERY good care of you.

Bad luck. Sorry bro. Ive NEVER had any return trying to find a new good quality LP. But if you go on places like The Gear Page or My Les Paul you will be able to find some incredible used Custom Re Issues that will blow most guitars away. Nothing rocks a thick lead tone like a great Les Paul. Just gotta find the right one.

I'm pretty much done wasting my time buying and flipping Gibsons... You can spend allday trying to find a 'good one' that sounds great, but when you do there's always the chance it might play like shit or be unstable as hell. That happened to me before.

I bought a late 80's Burny LP Custom for £400 and it plays better than all the Gibsons i owned/tried AND it sounds 95% the same (i say only 95% the same because it has a rosewood board.. not a negative at all, just that's the only thing on the guitar that isn't identical to the Gibson LPC).

For $3000 euro, that guitar should be flawless...

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Given the number of issues I've
seen/heard over the last two decades, I Never thought I'd say that
the CMI/Norlin years for gibson had better qc...

Half those guys do not even play them, they just post pics of them. No way would I buy without playing, no way.
