IMO it's sooo worth it to buy your own board/mixer and PA. Get a guy to run it. Done!
Easier said than done. A really good PA, including everything and big enough for outdoor shows, can run you into bigger bucks than most bands end up paying for everything else. There's only one thing worse than a shit sound guy, and that's a cheap PA. So yeah, if you can afford a good PA, it's the way to go, but after laying down 6 figures, I hope you didn't quit your day job :)

I'm surprised at the amount of posts suggesting that people keep their real volume setting a secret and then spring it on the sound guy on the first song of the set. That's a terrible idea since an engineer that would have otherwise made you sound great out front will then become interested in fucking with you to pass the time until you get off his stage. Less than ideal stage conditions are a fact of life for everyone. Honestly if I ever got to the point where I could hear everything perfectly on stage in every venue of a tour I would start making changes to fuck it up. Being too comfortable ruins good players and waters down great bands.

A band will always be at the mercy of the sound guy. I've toured and played out a ton myself and its true that most sound guys suck or are just glorified Dj's. Definitely find someone you know and trust to run your sound whenever possible. Of course like others have also said most venues and headliners wont let you go near their mixing board so I recommend taking that up with the venue or whoever before agreeing to play a show. Ask if you can bring your own sound guy and if they say no then you can decide right off the bat whether you think its even worth it to play the gig. One thing's for certain though, no matter how much money you spend on gear, or practice, in the end its pretty much all up to the sound guy, especially in bigger venues which is usually the last thing bands think about before playing. When you get stuck with a shitty sound guy most of the time theres just nothing you can do and the only way is to soldier on through the set. A lot of times though the mix onstage is very different from the mix the crowd hears through the PA. For all you know you could sound great even though you cant hear yourself on stage. Always when sound checking have a friend or just ask someone to stand in front and let you know what its really sounding like. Havent tried IEM's or other personal monitoring solutions myself really cuz a piece of me really just wants to believe that maybe this time the sound guy will get it right haha. But personally I'd rather not hear myself at all and have the crowd and fans think its sounded amazing than the other way around. It may not feel as rewarding but it beats the hell of out thinking you sounded great and being told you sucked lol.

Man, you hit on something a lot of us have to deal with. My band has our own sound tech and there are still certain venues where there's just no good solution. I'm lucky in that we usually play outdoors in the Summer or larger venues where I can run one or two 4x12. Not always the case though and when it's not, it sucks.

Been looking for a good solution for a while now...

I'm a bit old-school so the whole AxeFx / Kemper / direct to FOH / in-ears setup isn't in my wheelhouse at the moment. I like my Bogner rig too much. :)

Without going into it too much, side-washing isn't an option and I can't stand guitars in the monitor, so no cab facing backward or any of that jazz.

I recently ordered two EVH tilt-back 2x12 cabs and the 50w 5150 III from our own Mr. King. Don't have it all yet, but I'm holding out hope that rig does the trick. I'm not normally a fan of 2x12s but I guess we'll see how these work out. Essentially, your rig doubles as your own guitar monitoring system and you don't kill anyone else in the process.

I'll keep y'all posted on how it works out when I finally get all the pieces together.

Period bring your own sound guy. Problem solved.

Lots of house/headliner soundguys won't let the opening band's soundguy touch the board.
+1, in the real world and why would/should they! It's not like they are there to watch Joe plumber play sound man. To insure you have your own sound guy you would need to work that out by contract, not walk up and expect the dude who's paid to watch over the board to step aside.
I used to tie my Rotti up to the board before a show, just to keep the smart guys away. Mind you some real smart guy almost always thought he could win over my bitch  what a big laugh that was

Yeah I was a sound guy for a bit. I only did it to show everyone what could be done. And no matter how perfect things were, there was always some dude who thought he could do better :aww:

Just gotta jump in here again and remind all you East Coasters in Los Angeles you eill not get to "Bring your sound guy". All the venues have there own set up PA and sound guy, you will not get near that board. I.e. Whisky a Go Go, Roxy, etc...

If the place doesnt have a sound guy? your prolly playing a small Bar and should just bring a combo at that point...

I just got a combo, and Darren's considering a 1x12??

Again why I run 50 watters, and 2x12's, I'd rather be out playin...

All great suggestions. I think I'm going to bring a 1x12 and put it on a stand as a side fill.
Some weird comments here too.
I like the avatar wedge. That looks great.
I've been eyeing that Avatar wedge for a while now. I bet 2 out front would be killer.

They're ported and you can have them put in about any speaker you want. If I gigged out more I'd have one or two.

Reza,
Check out one of these stands if you go that route. Hard to beat for $20.00. I use one to hold my 4x12 either as a side-fill cabinet, or directly out front if I don't have room on stage. No complaints. You can spend a lot more, but you don't have to...
