Often wondered about this. I have a pretty low threshold for damage in general, but I unfortunately don't have any beater guitars. So I'm resigned to carrying around really expensive guitars and amps/modellers (this is relative) to jams/gigs where some moron could inflict minor or even major damage.
In a sense, I kind of regret selling some of the instruments that I could have used in those situations. No space for any more guitars as well, so I'm kind of out of luck when it comes to reducing the damage bill of sorts.
I think a lot of pro bands do the exact same thing when touring. Have a model that you won't grieve over if it gets a scratch or a ding or the headstock snaps off. Cheap and easily replaced.
The tradeoff, of course, is that you may not be as comfortable playing or the tone may not be as good. But the audience won't be able to tell anyway.
Curious to see what forum members are rocking when on stage. Do you use a beater, or do you carry along "expensive" gear? Show us pics, please.
