We all have a guitar player or two in our minds that just made it big because they knew someone in the band, or in the business and got to ride the coattails of their band mates to a music career.

List up any you can think of. This could be a lot of fun.

My pick: Eddie Van Halen

Gary Holt. I heard Kirk Hammet taught him how play guitar. Then took Kirks spot on Exodus, then on to Slayer. I may be wrong on this though.

If you're part of the music industry who you know is a big part of the game.

EVH wasn't going to make it on his own, but made it because he knew someone?

I think being bros with Sloth may have helped Corey Feldman. Great chops though.

The other guitarist in Oasis.

Think about it. Maximised the talent - pay curve.

I have a controversial one....

Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Wouldnt have been what he was without his brother.

Don't know about guitarists, but film composer Bear McCreary had a friend who knew film composer Elmer Bernstein. He introduced him to Elmer and then the rest is history. That connection helped him land a job composing for Battlestar Galactica. Not to say Bear doesn't have any talent, but it certainly can't hurt to be friends with USC teacher and composer Elmer Bernstein.
