strange thing i've noticed is guitar players who are predominantly blues rock guys with no deep understanding of theory tend to become redundant over the years, and the real musicians continue to evolve and don't lose their chops, although they often get weird and go through that crazy exotic eastern India phase in an attempt to go deeper into the spiritual side of music, out of boredom and disillusionment with commercial western formulas and predictability.

I tend to agree with this except for the insinuation that you have to have a "deep understanding of theory" to be a "real musician". And I'll add that the "real musicians" who "evolve" and go into an India phase end up boring the shit out of most of us.
Who is us...

deep understanding = true evolution
to me deep understanding has led to never being satisfied and never repeating myself

unless you are Eddi Van Halen or Brian May, I don't wanna hear the same thing for a lifetime

as for the east Indian thing, not everyone does that
and it is not a necessity, but i will say this:
all folk music and primitive music has soul
and yes, those that do evolve do tend to recognize the spiritual side of things that existed before modern music.

I enjoyed watching Shawn Lane perform more than I did Guthrie just recently. I saw Shawn when Power's of ten came out at the Belly Up in Solana Beach,CA. I know its all subjective and taste, but i just thought there was more musical substance and overall compositional elements that attracted me much more than a swiss army knife gunslinger. I'm a romantic classical fanatic and love old jazz. That said, Shawn's guitar performance was not only awe inspiring and full of melodic/harmonic innovations, but the arrangements/compositions ( especially for stringed instruments) just validated that he was in a different league than most players. I love watching guthrie do his thing and play so precisely perfect, but for melodies, arrangements and note choices, Shawn was it for me at a sophistated level. not too mention his unparalled technique on guitar and piano!

I also liked Shawns tone that night as well, i believe it was a Holmes amp which i hear are rare.

You know, Ed. Us.
Guess I'm not part of us...since McLaughlin's stuff when he went to India was my fave of his. For example...but then I'm biased. :)

Funny, that said there is more shred there than here in terms of finding it on a stage...but they are about 2 decades behind time line wise.

There are thousands of blues/rock guys out there so why is it that the one major black guy out there doing it keeps getting compared to Jimi Hendrix?

Don't bother answering the question, I already know the answer.

Is it because he wears blue suede shoes?

Guthrie needs to release some new original music already!

And ditch Cornford records. That partnership was nothing but a hinderance to the sale of his CD from what I can tell. Isn't the CD already out of print? Funny stuff.

If you have listened to "Erotic Cakes" several times and have this opinion, then it is your subjective taste in music. if you are comparing Guthrie's recent jam band thing with S. Lane playing his compositions off of "Power's of Ten", I think you are comparing apples and oranges...

Understood Steve. It's my preferred taste in music as I have heard Erotic Cakes. not to say Guthrie is not an awesome composer/arranger...he's brilliant. I just prefer Shawn's approach to music overall. they're both unique, but there is a "soulful and melodic/harmonic" element that attracts me more to Shawn not just in guitar playing, but the whole enchilada.

That's cool! I feel the same way about Guthrie's approach. I just love the compositions/playing/tone/humor/arrangements/etc. on "Erotic Cakes". First thing that *really* got me excited about guitar-oriented music since EVH... All of this is very personal and subjective. I can appreciate a lot of stuff between EVH and Guthrie, of course, but to have something speak to you and grab your attention to the point of listening to it over and over like a mental patient is something special :D

I could name at least 20 Satriani tunes that have a way better melody than that. Nothing special at all.

In fact if i came up with this instrumental myself i would not feel i accomplished very much( and i ain't very good )

Please look up the term subjective. read it, learn it, apply it then do it again.

I welcome your opinion, you are certainly entitled to it regardless of how utterly stupid it makes you look for phrasing it the way you did...

Let me repeat that this has a very below average melody. Nothing special at all. No clarification or weak assed IMHO needed. I do not share your politically correct weak minded apologist mindset. I state my view and that is it. Don't give a fuck what others think.
