Guthrie covering Shawn Lane's "Get You Back".....

I enjoyed watching Shawn Lane perform more than I did Guthrie just recently. I saw Shawn when Power's of ten came out at the Belly Up in Solana Beach,CA. I know its all subjective and taste, but i just thought there was more musical substance and overall compositional elements that attracted me much more than a swiss army knife gunslinger. I'm a romantic classical fanatic and love old jazz. That said, Shawn's guitar performance was not only awe inspiring and full of melodic/harmonic innovations, but the arrangements/compositions ( especially for stringed instruments) just validated that he was in a different league than most players. I love watching guthrie do his thing and play so precisely perfect, but for melodies, arrangements and note choices, Shawn was it for me at a sophistated level. not too mention his unparalled technique on guitar and piano!

I also liked Shawns tone that night as well, i believe it was a Holmes amp which i hear are rare.

If you have listened to "Erotic Cakes" several times and have this opinion, then it is your subjective taste in music. if you are comparing Guthrie's recent jam band thing with S. Lane playing his compositions off of "Power's of Ten", I think you are comparing apples and oranges...

Understood Steve. It's my preferred taste in music as I have heard Erotic Cakes. not to say Guthrie is not an awesome composer/arranger...he's brilliant. I just prefer Shawn's approach to music overall. they're both unique, but there is a "soulful and melodic/harmonic" element that attracts me more to Shawn not just in guitar playing, but the whole enchilada.

They're both pretty much unknown outside of the guitar community but Lane was incredible, Guthrie is incedible. Listen to what you like and who cares if someone else doesn't like it. Personally I always liked this tune, kinda happy sounding.

Yup, and sometimes i can't stand any of this instrumental stuff and I have to put on some AC/DC and drink a beer, depends on the day of the week.

I could name at least 20 Satriani tunes that have a way better melody than that. Nothing special at all.

In fact if i came up with this instrumental myself i would not feel i accomplished very much( and i ain't very good )

Please look up the term subjective. read it, learn it, apply it then do it again.

powers of ten is a great album. get you back, rules of the game, and gray pianos are some of my favorite songs. shawn played all instruments on that album. whatever kind of music it is, i like it.
