I once played one of those Lee Jackson designed Ampeg heads with the key lock on the front panel. Man, that thing sounded awesome to me. I almost bought it, but then read about possibnle issues people have with the amp or something. I passed, but it sounded great.

If I remember right..I think it had something to do with the molex connectors melting down?? I kinda remember him (Lee Jackson) putting out a video of how to repair them....I could be way off base though..time and my age and all..lol!!

Anyone else notice Lee Jackson's voice is much deeper than it was 6 years ago? Go listen to his most recent interview and then go back to his interview on Tone Talk in 2020.

I had one for awhile. Sounded really good, once you figured it out. Not the typical Marshall shitty bright cap tone. Never had any problems with it. A guy in town has the 1-12 EV loaded three channel combo, pretty cool but man is it HEAVY!

He doesn't give a shit about guitars either, he said he just gives them away after a while, in interviews he basically knows nothing about them. He probably collects anime figures.
Doesn't he know that he's supposed to??
What a fkn noob. prob a shit player and will never amount to nuthin. He could learn a thing or two here or at TGP.

How did you interpret my statement as an insult you retard?

One of his videos popped up on my YouTube once and the sound was on mute. This obvious amateur wasn’t even holding the pick correctly so I didn’t bother to listen before smashing that skip button. Whew, bullet dodged!

Jose by far.

For my tastes the Lee Jackson mods are too flubby and loose. Some people like that though.

My M-1000 definitely would be described that way unless you get very creative (or boosted).
It was cool to have to say I did, but not something I'd be in a rush to revisit.

One thing I do give Lee grace for, as his work seems to sort of get dumped on now, is that Lee was there when it mattered. His amps were played by dinosaurs when dinosaurs ruled the earth. Somebody like Friedman might make something that is perceived as better today, but that's easy as he has 40 years of other shit to pull from. I've not heard a recording of a Friedman amp from a major artist where I go "holy fuck what a sound", meanwhile Paul Gilbert's sound with Racer X, Zakk's sound around NRFTW (yeah most of the album was an 800 boosted), Akira Takasaki's tone, etc. They were what inspired us. So I'll always get more of a kick out of seeing a Metaltronix than I will a Friedman. Same way I will get more of a kick out of seeing a Soldano than a Friedman. Pioneers.

i interviewed Lee a few months back for some academic research we are doing into amp modding. Really nice guy with lots of good stories.

I bought a vl502 head back in the late 90's, I thought it licked ass but...I didn't know shit. However, the Lee Jackson era Ampeg cab with g12-75's was badass and it is beat to shit but still my main cab after all this time.

It licked ass !!??? That's ghey. :gay:

Collects anime??

He probably dresses up as anime!

On the down low....

Things that are considered unacceptably weird here are "quirky" in Japan. 🤓

Is that a 4x12 or a 2x12? Either way, glad it’s still working for you!

I have a couple late 80’s Ampeg 4x12s with G12T75s and agree, they are killer. Every time I try something else I end up going back to them.

So, I've played almost every high end high gain amp ever made. Mostly as a function of knowing lots of people, and working in a handful of nice studios with connections - although I've owned a couple of the "heroes" myself for a time. Almost every one of the legendary expensive amps has something to recommend it. Larry palm mutes sound like nothing else. SLO lead tones are sublime.

The Metaltronix is one of the worst sounding guitar amps i've ever played.

I's a noisy mess, theres way too much treble, it can't be dialed out, and it sounds like a stereotypical "80s metal" patch on early modeling devices from the 90s.

I freaking love the Crate Stealth and the Perfect Connection was one of the best under-the-radar preamps available before COB blew up. I'm not saying this because i think Lee Jackson is a retard or something - on the contrary I think he's made some amazing stuff. There's just no amp with that badge on it that i would spend two thousand dollars on, let alone ten.
I had 2 different M-1000's at different times. They are not high gain amps at all. They are stupid loud. I could not get a good tone out of either one. I'm playing one in my profile picture but actually it's a Friedman modded jcm 800 installed in the Metaltronix cab. I also owned a Lee Jackson XLS 100, that was a good amp.

I still love my Ampeg VL1002/Lee Jackson.
It doesn’t do “modern” tones. But, when I need sorta classic 80s hard rock tones, it does that to
a T. It sounds killer in a band setting.

I haven't played an XLS, but i've played a bunch of lee jacksons stuff, ampeg vl, perfect connection, stealth, and modded marshalls - theyve all sounded great.

The M1000 is one of the only things i've played that I just don't "get"

It sounds like the 80s patch on a digitech rp100

I seriously only think they are famous because of that one zakk wylde advert from when he was in Ozzy
