it boils down to voicing when picking between these guys, and allmost a have to play them yourselve thing just to know for sure. or do a guesstimate by figuring out what you like compared to the other forum members.

i haven't ever played a Fortin, but i would still agree with Kurtstuff based on my findings and who all are digging the Fortins.

i don't like how the Quickrods are voiced, and i didn't like how the two deferent Friedman modded amps i've heard/played were voiced. just seemed like too low of focus on the mids for me.

Cameron has the ears of God, and it appears Fortin does as well.

SplawN ends with an N also. I love mine, but on Rig Talk I'm in the minority. Splawns don't get much love here. Maybe Scott should raise the price $1000 or get a label maker? ;)

Here's a question for you guys. Which of the builders and specific mods/options would you suggest for someone playing Technical/Melodic Death Metal? Obviously this isn't the usual tone for this kind of playing, but that is exactly why I'm striving for it. I love these modded Marshalls, and I think it would be great to use them for my original work, along with some more modern amps.

A clean channel would be necessary, although if I had too I could A/B with something else. An AC30 perhaps...

I'm a man who likes a lot of options, so throw them at me.

Thanks mates.

I'm with ya man, I love splawns but there's not much splawn love around here, mostly Cameron and fortin. There's a few splawn owners but they are outnumbered.
I think your splawn sound as good as any of the fortin or Cameron clips I heard.

Splawn was the shit back in 2002-2003... LOL! :D

I've owned both the Quick Rod and the Pro Mod. They were both great amps and build quality was top notch. But the tone definately fell sort of my Cameron Aldrich. The clarity, balance and the bounce that Mark puts into the amp is second to none.

Too bad Cameron can't get his act together. He could be making alot of people happy.

I love my Quickrod. The only other thing that I would like to add since its smething that was asked about in the original post. The loop volume works very well on the new splawns. It works better than the volume pedal in the loop trick on older splawns.

I agree the newer ones sound better at lower vol now.

wish in one hand and shit in the other, and see which fills up first.

i'd like to see Scott add an amp to his line up that would target us guys that didn't quite jive with the Quickrod.

even though some of us didn't get along with the Quickrod, we all still like and respect Scott as a builder. Scott is good people!

Check out the PWE Event Horizon. An amazing amp that sounds like it is right up your tone alley...

I have worked on all the amps mentioned except the Fortin amps. They are all great, it boils down to your taste. For my "hot rodded Marshall" gas, I love my Carol-Ann Revo. It was influenced by the jubilee. Great master volume and sounds great even at bedroom volumes...

All the cameron clips I have heard sound like a 3 pre QR to me.

To comment on the Splawn gets no love thing, David Bray really doesnt get much love here either. I have a JCM 800 with a Mod II and some other "tricks" added and it is THE tone I have been looking for. Between that and my Cornford MK50 they are a bad ass team. Dave is very professional, answers and returns calls/emails and has an outstanding hear for tone. My 2204 smoked my Cameron HG Jose plexi, even though I still do like and respect Mark's work. Bray would be an excellent choice. He is also doing a plexi style amp with the Bray name on it using top quality parts and components!

Friedman Naked.

sounded very similar to my Cameron modded Jose JMP I had before, but with a little more... then again they are more expensive than a modded Marshall or CCV even.

If you do want to go the modded Marshall route, I would not even hesitate and go Fortin

The Quick Rod tone is definitely different than the Cameron Aldrich. I've owned a dozen Camerons at least and own the Splawn. Falling short is definitely a subjective statement though and depending on your opinion, it could go either way.

Ok I email Mike Fortin and he gave me the price of all his mods. He also stated that he is not accepting any work until June at the earliest. As for the platform he said any old JCM 800 or Metro would work fine. I am going to email Friedman next.
