I lot of people talk about the Vintage Modern, but I think the DSL kicks its ass. The tube screamer in front and half gain setting like u had it is how i used to run mine and i just had a blast playing it! they sound even better through a 4x12 with greenies.

Im not sure if Im going to be able to phrase this properly but Im kind of seeing a trend especially when it comes to the newer Marshalls!! What I mean is That I have been noticing that People rag on a particular model (The DSL for example) until a new model comes out and then after a while the old model seems to become the best thing since sliced bread lol!!

What I will say is that the DSL's that I have played in the past were very inconsistent and this particular one KILLS whereas the others were just ok!!

Now that I'm done with the rant..... The DSL that I just played with a greenie cab and a tubescreamer would be KILLER and I mean KILLER!! Add a bit of delay and I would be home free :rawk:

BTW........YOU ROCK!!!

Mesas are no different. The DC series, the nomads, then F-series, now the express series. They all got ragged when they were the current one. Every time mesa changes, people seem to line up to praise the old model. I think its just the nature of the beast.

Yeah, I guess it seems to be that way for sure. I guess I used Marshall as an example because I haven't been looking at any of the Boogies since the MKIV's.

Only a matter of time before Ralph is playing a Fender/Gibson and a DSL.

I got to play through some dude's DSL 100 a few weeks ago after I repaired it. I had not ever played through a stock version before. I used to own a Voodoo Deluxe modded DSL 100.

Anyway, I really liked the amp after I got it back up to top notch working condition. I've been thinking about a DSL 50 here lately as well. I don't need 100 watts and I want the ability to crank it up through my Bogner Uberkab, which has 4 of those "Stan-Spec" Weber Pre-Rola clone 30 watt speakers in it. The DSL 100 was spitting out some fairly good tone through the Bogner cab with my Gibson Les Pauls and my buddy's Gibson SG plugged in.

I've used one for 4 years when they came out (and Gary played them) and loved it.
Good amps, even better with a choke.

Hey Olaf!

What does the choke do for the amp? I saw where some guys were doing this somewhere or another on some board. I did get a glimpse of some guy's DSL 100 that had those huge Mercury stack Power and Output Transformers in it. He had a choke installed too.

With just a resistor (depending on its size/value of course) the amp gets a faster attack and sounds more modern. And there's a certain "high crisp coldness" (no idea how to describe that better) which is common in typical non-choke amps like Engls.
A choke adds some sag (variation of the choke values (Ohms, Henries) is interesting btw) and gives the DSLs a more "natural" (in this case a more Marshall-ish) feel.

Yo Ralph ... Was good to see ya there . I didnt think for a min id see you there .. SUPRISE !!! YA CAK ! I asked Billy about what he wanted for that DSL and i think it was a LIL  High !?!?! hey but thats life and marshall prices arent getting any lower   I just love that JVM ... How hard is the choke to install on a DSL?

Anyone know if the JVM's have a choke?

I have heard that a choke makes those amps come alive Brother Olaf! I also hear the coldness that you are talking about especialy on some recordings that I have heard of the DSL's. For lack of a better description its a tinny grinding high end sound that I hear. You can hear it on the new Dokken album because John uses DSL's.

YOU ROCK!!

Joey!!

It was great hanging out with you the other day! I told my girlfriend that I ran into you at the store and that we had a killer time and she just shook her head laughing! The reason why she was laughing is because she was giving me shit for taking the whole day off but she had to laugh because said Only I could take a day off and meet up with a friend unknowingly and have a great time :hys:

I will see you soon at the studio!!
