No need for a loop with a preamp. The loop would be after the preamp section in a head. Either straight in to fx unit (series) or into a line mixer (parallel) is the exact same as a loop.

To quote myself, above. And you can still push the input of the power amp, you simply turn the input of the FX unit down to avoid clipping.![]()
