I'm looking at buying a hot rodded Marshall type amp and have a few options to consider. One is the Ceriatone Chupacabra and every clip sounds amazing except for the fact its only 1 channel and I tend to prefer 2 channels. That's the main reason I unloaded my D60 awhile back. The other option I've looked at is a Splawn Nitro SS with the 6V6's. Does anyone have experience with that amp and can really tell the difference in feel with the smaller glass? Other possible options may be along the lines of Friedman, either the Runt 20 or PT-20. PT-20 is only 1 channel again. Throw me some feedback and suggestions but keep the price around $1k :(

Forgot to mention the Splawn Super Sport 22w as well.

Splawn QR is badass for those tones. I kind of regret selling mine :aww:

I'd second the quick rod over the Nitro. The nitro had a weird eq curve, tons of bass and a super high mid spike that made it sound thin, even with the massive amounts of low end it had.

The QR is also available in the SS head configuration.

I own the cupacabra as well. It's more true to the classic Marshall sound and has a ton of tones you can get with it, but like you said, one channel

You'll certainly miss that thud, with smaller glass/transformers.

If you want basic, the Splawn Competition would be on my list, as would a Ceriatone Yeti. I've owned both, and they both simply kill it. The Competition is single channel, but 3 modes, footswitchable.

I'd also not discount a tried/true JCM2000 DSL. I love the 50 watter. A 2555X wouldn't be a bad choice either.

What does the SS Configuration do? or what features does it have?

It's a smaller headshell. Same size as the 6V6, but you can get 50 watt with EL34's.

I used to be a must-have-two-channels-amp guy. I had so many of them - GK, Fender HRD, Marshall DSLs, Soldano SLO, every EVH 5150 model, etc. But I swear, once you get into the vintage Marshall tone, you can live with one channel and a pedal for OD or boost and just roll back your guitar volume knob for very clean cleans. I'm taking my DSL40C to band practice tonight and it will stay on green the whole time, with a Friedman DS pedal for when I need more gain/boost. I know it's not really what you asked for. But just keep it in mind.

Thanks man! They've blocked a lot of music stuff here at work but not rigtalk...Odd?

THIS, a lot of higher gain stuff i set lower and edge it over with a boost anyway. I have come to realize I like some sort of boost to tighten. Lots of great options if you start with a Marshallish crunch. BB preamp, Cusak Screamer, regular screamer, cheapo Klonish type pedal, and then for extra lead boost, just kick in a good clean boost like a spark booster or koko boost. Done.

Tons on marshall flavoured amps-

Laney Ironheart is in the same realm as fryette/ splawn stuff. They have a killer crunch channel and a lush clean channel plus a 3rd channel as an option.

A Soldano Hotrod would also work for you. Different feel from the splawn/ fryette.

Ither amps to check out- 3rd power, voodoo v-plex, rivera fandango, mesa royal atlantic

I have a 2010 Nitro and a 2011 Quick Rod. I actually prefer the Nitro over the Quick Rod. Both are fantastic but I didnt experience any weird EQ with the Nitro but from what I gather every year and amp have their differences. As far as the low end I actually prefer the low end since I always use a boost. When using the boost it takes the bass to a perfect level for me.

Have you thought about getting a stock Marshall modded? Plenty of options there.

I gigged a D60 for a year using the guitar vol as my way to a clean sound....worked great. For a modded Marshall tone I'd pick that over any amp in this thread, other than a modded Marshall itself. I had numerous players ask me what amp I was playing. Great modded Marshally tone.
The Ceriatone stuff, I had a modded 2204 clone blow the transformer after a gig. Yes my impedances were matched. If you go that route I'd highly recommend getting one without the transformers and buying a pair of Classictones and throw those in. Better tone and more reliable in my experience.

Lots of stuff to look at in this range and you came to the right place to talk about it

I'm going to second the Quick Rod and not because I have one. There are actually a lot of good recommendations in this thread both single and multi channel. Give me serious GAS just being in here LOL.

But with the Quick Rod, you:

a.) Don't need any pedals
b.) Get a very clean clean channel with lots of headroom
c.) You get 3 Gears on the OD channel (older amps are not footswitchable)
d.) You get an OD2 and Solo boosts that are footswitchable
e.) You can run at half power like I do so...50w
f.) You get a very good loop that can handle a lot
g.) There are more Quick Rods out there in the wild vs the other Splawns

I would go with the QR.But be prepared its a tight unforgiving amp.
I would also steer clear of the low end Friedmans. To my ears the runt is a crappy sounding amp.
