Lol on the tone knob. That was me for years before I discovered the joy of octave and fuzz pedals, and the atmosphere of a tape echo repeating into a smokey dark wash of sound.

5k is approaching the frequency range of pick chirp. Are you sure it’s not the strings or how your holding the pick? Or maybe even what the pick material is made out of?

Tone is all in the rugs that you use. Everyone knows cat piss stained carpet rugs make your tone less shitty.

I would check dcr and pull the back panel to make sure wiring and anticipated speakers are OK. I do that with everything I buy. I've seen GC sell used stuff, heck even headstock repairs as "new".

Yeah this was in the back of my mind too. That's high up enough frequency range wise, enough to where I sincerely doubt it's a "swap speakers" or "change strings" problem

This is why you don’t want a guitar amp to amplify literally everything - there are frequencies we find unappealing around 300Hz and again around 5.5KHz such as pick noise or just general tube noise even. Nothing worse than nailing that solo and a tube is crackling underneath it. There’s also frequencies that are just wasteful at the extreme top end and bottom end too which can affect clarity, perceived loudness, and tube life.

Jesus ChuggNorris Christ OP. Can't you just take your rig to a friend's house who also plays and swap some components in/out to isolate the problem? At the very least, plug your rack into another cabinet?
