Marathon has been canceled. And I just read that barrier Island's in NJ have been ordered evacuated for up to 8 months!

The towns affected are Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, island sections of Berkeley Township, South Seaside Park, Lavallette, Ortley Beach and Mantoloking.

Are hurricane and flood insurance required in the area, Danny, for seaside homes or low elevations? I remember when I bought a house in Louisiana, in order to finance a home, anything below 14' elevation had to carry the flood insurance. Anyway, hope all those folks are insured in the areas to be evacuated. That is a long time. Is FEMA up there assisting like they were around New Orleans?

Not sure about the insurance? I'm 30 minutes from the Ocean. I grew up 5 minutes from it though and moved when I was 30.

A lot of the barrier Islands are Summer/vacation homes. But not all. And yes most areas were evacuated or the death toll would have been a lot higher. I'm still trying to get a hold of a friend of mine who lives in Highlands NJ, haven't heard anything.

It's 1:46 in the morning as I write this. I got back to my in-laws' house after a 2.25 hour quest for gasoline for my wife's car about a half hour ago. It took me an hour to find a station, and an hour of waiting on a line. I'm about 50 minutes north of the New York City and we got hammered pretty hard. A tree was torn in two in our culdesac, and fortunately fell the opposite way of my Mustang and the Mrs' BMW. Missed 'em by about 50 feet. I'm currently at my in-laws' house since ours hasn't had power since 3 pm Monday. I'm hoping it comes back tomorrow. I feel extremely fortunate. Two middle schoolers in the next town over from us were killed by a tree falling through their house, and my in-laws' neighbors' house lit up like a Christmas Tree and is little more than a pile of ash and rubble. I have no clue whether it was a generator operating error, or lightning.

If no power, a 2.25 hour gas quest, and 5 days at my wife's parents' house is the most I have to complain about, I'm pretty freaking lucky.

On a side note, every time there's a natural disaster, the United States is the first to not only write a check, but the largest check by a long shot. Our country's bankrupt and NOBODY gives a shit about OUR relief effort. Fuck the rest of the world next time something happens to them. We need to cut out this bleeding heart bullshit.

Glad to hear most, if not all of you are ok. Sorry to hear about those of you that suffered damage and loss. As Kage said, NYC was hit in a pretty bizarre way. Downtown was affected, but where I am was like another world. Almost a tale of two cities. As I was watching the news when the storm was hitting, it sounded like the world was coming to the end...on the news and outside of my apt. I couldn't see anything from my window and decided to go downstairs and take a look out the door. What I saw was nuts....

There was some wind, but when I opened the door, it was almost mild. Some girls were stumbling home from the bar. I looked down the street and could it be...yes, 7 Eleven was open. I couldn't believe it. While downtown was completely down and NJ was being wiped out, it was like everyday up by me. At least I got to help out Kage and hang for a bit. Most of the places by me even had supplies this time. Last time (Irene), you couldn't get water, batteries, flashlights or anything. This time they all had plenty. It was bizarre. I have to say I am grateful for that for sure.

I am beside myself about what happened to Queens, SI, NJ and LI and other such places. It is crazy. To all of you that were affected....be safe and be well.

I've seen the article. If the alabama crews were turned around it wasnt due to being non union. I'm personally working with line crews from Illinois, indiana, florida, texas, ohio, and contractors from jersey. Some are union and some are not.

We had an article in the paper that says they were turned away, but there are others (above) that say no. I have no idea at this point.

And I can't believe that Sandy is being named the 2nd most powerful storm on record. Apparently the category number isn't the most accurate way to judge a storm. Remember that this was pretty unique that it combined with a cold front from the West, kinda like the Perfect Storm back in the 90's. All in all, who cares right? A Hurricane is a Hurricane it seems.

My GF and our business partner had to go to a hotel in Newark with her family, cause Union was no power till further notice....

But everybody is alive, and that's whats not replacable!

just heard from two buddies that lost all the gear, were renting studios in the same building, near Gowanus Canal. kind of makes me glad my gear is still in Chicago.


going out to volunteer tomorrow, guess i'll get a more first hand look. have to say, this thing has developed in stages for me. during the actual storm, even though i was stuck in brooklyn and couldnt get home to manhattan, it kind of felt like "what's all the fuss about? it's just a little wind and rain." since then i have walked through the blackout areas late at night and during the day, been to southern brooklyn and seen 2 mile long waiting lines for gas, gas stations manned by 20 cops to keep people from rioting, abandoned cars. have walked hours and hours to get to work and home due to no public transit. and the pics of the rockaways and staten island....unbelievable. at the moment it feels like I live in a normal city but can walk over and be an extra in a post-apocalypse movie if I so desire.

Thoughts, Prayers and good mojo sent out to anyone affected by this disaster, I'm glad you guys made it through this.
About 10 years ago after high school the bronx and brooklyn was my home for 2 years, never thought a storm like this would hit the NY area like this.

I have some family in Georgia,Tennessee and Florida but they're doing ok.
Hang in there, even though some of you lost everything and there is a long road to recovery, you still have the most important thing, your life.

There's some serious damage. This is a good lesson for those of us who were not affected all too. Make sure your home emergency supply rations are in good order. Regardless of where you are, there's the possibility of a natural or other kind of disaster happening. When utilities and the supply chain is seriously damaged people suffer, or worse.

Yeah but everything is ok. I didn't lose anything other than a roof haha but we have someone coming over tomorrow to remove the trees and then we can get things back together. It's scary as shit getting hit in the head with sheet rock and then looking up to see a branch above my head in my kitchen. Just insane.

I feel very fortunate that aside from some lost income this week (and possibly next), that I was not affected by this.

I was in Vegas for Sema we figured at worst the basement would flood a few inches and no power so she told me to go.
My g.f. said the same thing just wind with a mist of rain no down pours or anything so she said she was ok.
Until the Moonachie levy broke

Then my g.f. sent me this from home

Luckily with some help I was able to get back to my g.f. while the water was still pretty high to deal with shit.

I think Carl uses cablevision to get online and if that is the case, he more then likely can't get online.
Cablevision SUCKS when it comes to bad weather in my humble opinion

Id be willing to bet that he is ok. (hope he is BTW)
I live about 15-20 minutes from him and I think the area where he is got hit just about as bad as

I did, which mean loss of power, phone and internet.
