I agree, these videos have been well done. I'm not even a fanatical VH fan but find the info on how / when this stuff happened to be interesting.

I hated those mushy, sloppy and over-distorted hands he used on ADKOT. He should have used his old hands from the early albums.

It was something musicians who couldn't afford to buy strings would do. Boil them to get the dirt and grime off and also give them a bit of zing. In particular, bassists would do this.
 
Whatever Eddie was doing was magic, look at the 5150 line of amps for example. He really did take guitar playing as well as tone forward.
