It was something musicians who couldn't afford to buy strings would do. Boil them to get the dirt and grime off and also give them a bit of zing. In particular, bassists would do this.

Whatever Eddie was doing was magic, look at the 5150 line of amps for example. He really did take guitar playing as well as tone forward.

Just think: If Mike Soldano had just given Ed a few free SLOs, we never would have had the Peavey 5150. Instead, Ed bought a few and took one to Hartley Peavey and said; "Make me one like this!"
And the rest is history.

For me the OG was lower mid focused, more oomph, little more gain. I couldn't bond with the II, lost some of that low push, bit to mid forward and less gain albeit a tighter sounding amp. Had it modified and disliked it even more. That said, best live guitar tone I ever heard from anyone was the III tour and the 5150II's.

Something tells me that the Jose prototype amp wasn't doing it for Ed and that's why he never gave that amp to James Brown to use as a template for what he wanted.
James Brown stated Ed played through a VTM at the first Peavey meeting according to that video and from my understanding the VTM is based around a Jose Modded Marshall but Ed wanted more gain according the James Brown in the above video.
Instead James Brown does admit to using a Soldano SLO to design the 5150 and he even goes so far to say that Ed did like the SLO.

Yep, money doesn't buy moral integrity unfortunately. Didn't get free stuff, so screw you.
Imagine if Mike had of cloned Ed's Marshall and released a line of amps or published the exact schematic and gut pics and spilled all his secrets. He'd have been sued up the ass.
It's cool we got the 5150, but it was still a dick move toward Mike's amp.
