To the casual observer it's obviously a grey area and TBH I've often thought about removing it altogether. I like clarity. Grey areas, not-so-much.
Note that it says, "... with obvious intentions of spoiling the fun for ALL others".
The worst perpetrator in this regard has been bant multiple times and returned. In his defence, "spoiling the fun for everyone" is from the POV of many not what he's done 'cause they find his toungue-in-cheek ad-hom funny. The number of likes he receives for it says all you need to know.
To "spoil the fun for everyone" one would literally have to insult, in a serious way (not joking), everyone. Accusing the entire forum of being PDFs is a clearcut example of this and as you'd know someone was bant last year for that... twice, the second time permanently.
Hundreds of different statements and nicknames are meant as insults brother.
What can I tell ya; they happen in the locker room on an almost-constant basis.
Some who never engage in that sort of thing don't even receive them but those who get into the argy-bargy know what to expect.

Until recently you didn't hang in OTC much, if ever, so please consider the fact that you always have that option; it's not like it's thrust into your face or anything.

As for making "far too many excuses", I'm simply defending the rule framework that's been in-place for years now. It's worked pretty-well IMHO and I'm sure the vast majority of the OTC side of the family would agree. The only reason this has come up for discussion is 'cause a member created a thread that was a petition to get someone bant, something we absolutely would never abide by 'cause it's rules that dictate such outcomes, not feelings.

I agree with this but we throw homophobic slurs around in OTC all the time. I don't think that means we are homophobic. I think it means we like to call people names. I think because we are mostly middle aged men on this site - that is a pretty common slur. That said, my only recommendation on this rule topic is to broaden the rule to include individual attacks that are continual. So it wouldn't have to be 'ALL' or nothing. That said, I guess if someone called me a cracker (for example) repeatedly, it wouldn't bother me because I've already subscribed to the notion of what OTC allows.

Oh for sure. The fact that 'lover' is in there proves it so. And I misread your 'isn't' homophobic as well. I was trying to say we call people names like 'your gay' or 'your guitar is gay' as a joke because we already know they are heterosexual. But if I know someone is homosexual and call them a fag or fag lover, then I should be warned and then banned if I continue. Especially if someone reported me as being offensive. That was my proposition.

Sure, the logical conclusion would be that the accuser has an issue with the named race / people.
It's not specifically stating that one "race", or in this case a people, is inferior. A statement of this nature is incontestably-racist and qualifies for a banting.
The implementation of the rule is clear and has been rebroadcast umpteen times, so there's also no excuse.

I spoke with him via PM, but not about his reasoning 'cause I thought it was obvious.
It's almost par-for-the-course for lefties to shy away from robust FoS environments 'cause whilst many of them believe in FoS, most can't handle free expression of opposing views expressed with passion. I'm not saying that this is 100% what happened in Johnny's case, but if I had to guess, that might be it.
IMHO he's a really-nice guy and I and I'm sure others will miss him. Dude wouldn't harm a flea.
Who knows, perhaps he'll rejoin one day. Let's hope so.
