I don't really care what he used to record those tones... what I like is the fact that the semi open back 1x12 mic'd from front and back sounds HUGE. Great technique, thanks for posting this and for the sense of humour.

Would. Read. Again.

If I could, would you? Again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again AND AGAAAAIN....

Concerning the rear sm57, did you flip the phase?

I manually dragged the wav files in line with each other. I use multi mic's so often and got so paranoid about phase I am used to doing it this way.

That was the big reveal. I could not believe that was a 1x12. I've done tests on a 1x12 vs 4x12 and the 1x12 always sounded smaller. The proximity of the other speakers seem to add a lot of satisfying freqs. This convinced me I can now gig metal with a 1x12 combo. Just take 2 sm57's and write a letter of apology to the sound guy for using 2 mic's. Just tell him 75/25 when it comes to mixing them.

I wonder what the results would be using a semi open back 2204 combo using this method with a G12-65. I will have to try that out this weekend. It almost as if the rear mic gives you the feel of adding a room mic for size but more zero'd in on the lower EQ frequencies which adds girth to the sm57.

So would soundman have to flip phase?

The problem with phasing from using several microphones is that it isn´t always a 180 degree thing you can just flip and be done with. All those different degrees are in play and cause various cancellations. You often need to listen and tweak the placements.

But I don´t think the speaker shoots a reverse phase out the back, if that´s what you´re asking.

It sucks that old thread was deleted, with Ronnie S Champagne’s quotes.
Was super excited when Mr C popped in on that thread.
Thanks to those who saved the quotes and reposted here!!!

An overdrive into a Bassman running right at breakup is an underrated sound. It’s loud, it’s gnarlly, and kicks all kinds of ass in recorded or live settings. Anyone looking for early EVH sounds could do worse.

This thread has me wanting to track down a Thiele cab with EVM speaker.
I’ve heard from a lot of folks that it’s a killer sound.

It's a monster sound from such a little cab. I had one, and got rid of it like a fool, because I used it with a JCM800 2203, and it looked ridiculous. Now I often use a 1x12 combo, and it's more or less the perfect add-on to any 1x12 combo. Open back and port. Spread and tightness and very very loud if need be.

Nice. I have to find one. Any “best” out there?
