Is this what you get when you order the "Tan pants supreme"?

They are just playing BS - this is real jazz:

Thanks for that. I actually dig that video. Fantastic. I had a great opa that was an orchestra conductor (filled in a lot of seats too) and I very much respect and enjoy this. I wish I could understand and play that well.
What is that guitar he is playing?

I have a music degree, and this was embarrassing to watch. Bunch of people high on their own farts thinking they are going 'outside the box' by playing absolute nonsense. Saddens me but not surprised, as you can see it is an old professor leading the troupe who could not even play single notes that sound good. If you can't play single notes that are pleasing, nothing you play will sound good.

Posted a refresher in the vid above for some actual good jazz - Jody Fisher.
You nailed it…
I’ll be the first to admit that certain examples of jazz/fusion are too far beyond my level of musical intellect and understanding to move my needle, but that’s definitely not the case here.
That was the most pretentious display of self indulgent, unmusical masturbatory fuckery I’ve ever witnessed in my 56 years.
Every one of those cork sniffing fart eaters should be bludgeoned within an inch of their lives with their own instruments
for the brutal ear raping of all those unfortunate enough to witness this unholy audio abomination.
This one cuts deep….

You could take almost any pair of jazz instrumentals, play them right on top of each other and it would still sound like every other jazz instrumental

It’s really a hilarious experiment

This

the amount of pretense possessed by jazz guys (especially on TGP JFC) is unbelievable for the amount of shitty, awful music in the genre

Even if I don't like it, I can appreciate the talent of Django or Jaco or something like that

But this genre just has so much unmusical bullshit it's insane

I prefer less jizz with my jazz

Most of it is smooth jazz i.e r n b/neo-soul style stuff but there is a younger crop of dudes still doing some really awesome bebop style jazz. Some of the performances on Emmet Cohen's youtube channel are phenomenal.

I believe you, but the bullshit to "phenomenal" ratio is incredibly poor compared to many other genres

There's so much unlistenable "muzak" and "experimental" (which is jazz speak for atonal garbage) jazz music that is more unlistenable than the most hardcore black metal band on earth

true jazz has been reduced to a set of basic formulae, restrictions, and rules, etc., devoid of much innovation IMO.

Yup, honestly it's sad because jazz used to be really vibrant and expressive as a genre

Just combing through some TGP "jazz" playing and you'll start to understand just how corroded and decayed the genre is

It's kind of terrifying because it feels like THAT is what's in store for punk, rock, heavy metal as well

It's already there in every genre. It's easier to buy the gear and associated cliched look than it is to bust your ass building something unique. It's easier to use a bunch of programmed shit from home than to hustle the right players for a band and book gigs.

There are more distractions now, the gigs mostly don't pay a lot unless you've already established a good network of better clubs (which is a constant never ending hustle), and younger players mostly don't respect the traditions of any of those music styles any longer. As a result there are more band-less cosplayers than actual guys willing to get into the trenches. Finding someone under 35 who gets it is like searching for a needle in a haystack now. Never mind the hired gun mentality of a lot of the better players. Money does talk though.....

The got-a-million-bucks-i-own-a-live-music-venue morons enable it all by booking those cut-rate bands, duos, and solo acts, not realizing it contributes to their own club's demise. There is a place down the street that has a "blooz jam" on fridays for one reason....it doesn't want, or can't rather, pay to have a decent band. Grifters everywhere now.

That's the key, and honestly it's really sad because it isn't that expensive to hire a really good band. The local punk and ska venues here have gotten tons of relatively big bands (The Toasters, Swingin Utters, Calabrese, Green Jelly, Ten Foot Pole, etc etc etc)

it's so stupidly simple, you spend a grand or whatever the guarantee is for solid touring acts, pay a couple of hungry local bands a couple hundred bucks, and you slowly build it up - the more great shows happen, the more local bands pop up like weeds. Then the older local bands get better and better, and go on their own tours and end up being big enough to headline.

It's like planting and planning a garden TBH

It's so stupidly simple I dont understand how people in these positions to own music venues are this dumb

If you guys want to listen to something chill that isn't gay as GRIDS, you could try some folky funeral doom

those first 3 albums are hard to beat in that sytle of music.. I lost interest after that but seeing this is making want to dig into their career after 1999 .... thanks for posting this

I'm not into the later stuff either. But those first three albums are among the best run in the genre - absolutely stunning command of melody and tension
