That is a line of thought that's been parroted for decades my friend.

As for why the US is outpacing everyone else, it seems it does a better job at locking up the trash rather than giving people a slap on the wrist even for the most heinous crimes. Note I used the word better. The fact that people with 50+ arrests are still prowling the streets here in the states says there is a ton of room for improvement.

Also, some of the countries on that list likely value the idea of "borders."

It's just such an obviously horrible idea: attach the profit motive to locking up as many people as possible. I saw where some judges were getting kickbacks by sending people to these private prisons.

You guys can pretend like racism is the reason why 13% of the population makes up 50% of the prison population if you want but the only way that argument holds water is if you blame crime by young urban blacks on the democrat policies in those cities. The incarceration rate for white Americans is 412 per 100,000, which is still about 4x the overall rate for Canada.

Simultaneously you then don't have families now imploding in divorce because of financial strain. People from single parent homes are 2 to 3 times more likely to do prison time, have fewer opportunities, and are less likely to be financially successful. Nearly half of incarcerated people come from single family homes. There, I just removed over 20% of the prison population.

Increase the number and speed which capital punishments are carried out. End felony prosecution for stupid stuff like DWI's when there is no actual victim. There are people serving life sentences in Texas for repeat DWIs.

There has been plenty of opportunity given. We all pave our own path, and nothing is guaranteed. Excuses for poor choices and choosing a life of crime are just that. Excuses for shitty life choices, lack of self accountabilty and just fucking laziness.
