List your musical opinions you know make people salty because it isn't their opinion.

- Dimebag was good, nothing amazing, shot to god status by dying, shredding pentatonics and doing divebombs isn't godly
- Most modern metal/rock recordings today sound the same, the singing usually is the indicator of what band you are listening to, not tone etc
- Mordern digital recording techniques save money and time but rarely produce legendary rock albums
- My favorite album by Rush is Power Windows
- Iron Maiden haven't produced a good album since Brave New World
- EVH makes alot of mistakes live and I never liked his tone
- Most revived rock bands from back in the day make crap music now a days
- Too many people buy thousands of dollars on studio equipment and boutique amps... talk about how amazing their gear is... but never have any recordings
- I like gated and verby drums
- My best sounding guitar is a 250$ Les Paul copy with JBs, sounds better than the 1k+ LPs I've played and my friends own

That goes for just about every hobby... cars, golf, etc..

I guess it's the same as someone buying a Nissan GTR who isn't a racing driver, they have the money and are interested. If someone invests in expensive gear that's good, they are keeping companies alive and building a collection of things that make them happy. I'm all for that!

My issue is when I pour my money, heart and soul into my recordings and some dude with no recordings, no clips and nothing to show comes and slates my stuff. I've had awsome help and positive criticism but the worst is when someone says "do this and this, this is too loud/quiet, comrpess this, your tone lacks depth" then you ask for an example and they don't have one.

It's like going up to a plumber and telling him how to do his job... where is your experience, you may have the best tools but I dont see you fixing any drains...

Or play along yourself with Comfortably Numb. Guess what? You sound fantastic. The song matters more than the player.

I gotta disagree.

And I have proof:

Love the top on the prs in your avatar!!
What, that gaudy green guitar??? ;-)

Thanks! I've owned it for years. One of my all-time favorites.

sober EVH couldn’t write a jingle

Sterling Ball has a big orange head
apparently that makes him an asshole
or maybe he’s just an asshole

Relics are for relics
Fender computer copied relics are Disney-ready
and $4500

After his accident, Yngwie got fat, so did his fingers and he lost the ability to damp
that’s some noisy shit

the first letter in KISS should be ‘P’
the first letter in RUSH should be ‘P’
that last one makes no sense

I would PISS on Rob Chapman when he was not on fire
I might be the one to set fire to Rob Chapman
Then I wouldn’t PISS on him

Alex King thinks he’s ‘someone'
someone called Rockin’Chippy
and that we’d all like to buy a t-shirt
but he’s a doofus
with a shit-ton of gear that’s all the same
and no we don’t want your stupid t-shirt

I get it, but just because someone doesn't record doesn't mean they don't know tone. ;)

I'd venture and say it's more of people who can't play much or well who are critics tone. I find their opinions less valid because good players can achieve good tone through almost anything. ;)

I'm not sure this is an Unpopular opinion....

Never understood why he bought all those gnarly hi gain amps only to play mid-speed AOR, haha.

-the phrase-"SOLD OUT",.. is idiocy,... Does anyone really think a band gets together over a glass of wine and say's, " ya know,... Let's turn our backs on our audience, write some pop songs that can be used for movie tracks, sitcoms & commercials... WE'LL MAKE MILLIONS!!!"

-shred, tapping and playing fast DOES NOT MAKE YOU BETTER!!!

-being technically proficient & following the "progression's & formulas of music rules"...... Makes you so boring and predictable I wanna rip your head off and puke down the hole!!!!

-JAZZ is the musicians graveyard-

-(nobody really likes it, not even the JAZZ playing zombies)-

I love Active Pickups.
I still love Metallica (even though they are sloppy AF live nowadays)
I'm Australian and LOATHE AC/DC
Duvall is a better fit in AIC than Layne Stayley was
My guilty pleasure band is Barenaked Ladies
Faith No More are possibly the greatest Live band I've ever seen
Mike Patton is a god
I love Vernon Reid's playing. He is also a tremendously nice dude.
80's screamo metal annoy's the shit out of me. Once that warbling Vibrato kicks in the music gets turned off.
I'm glad "Grunge" killed off hair metal.
RHCP died after the BSSM album and are a crappy pop rock band these days.
I hate Greenbacks
I love V30s

I actually just checked this thread out - I'd have to say this could be "Best Thread Award 2016" material if there ever was such a thing

Seriously... Wasn't expecting this at all - nicely done OP!!

Alright, Mo's go 'round:
- I'm not a fan of EVHs tone; nor do I give a rats ass as to his gear. He's got swing in his playing, but that's it
- I can't stand ANY progressive metal that has cookie-monster vocals. I have zero tolerance for this style of bullshit "singing"
- Music was better when ugly people made it
- Rob Trujillo saved Metallica
- Jon Frusciante was the RHCPs
- Dave Navarro's a cool dude, been through a lot, and is actually a cool "real" dude when not "for show"
- 90% of all of us don't need 90% of the gear we have
- 90% of us here don't know what tone we're seeking, we think we do, but marketing and herd mentality is at the core
- I don't like 80s metal, and this includes Lynch...guy does nothing for me (only mainstay was Ozzy, he's the exception)
- Grunge saved real music and then grunge lost its grunge and became the antithesis to what it once was
- I like Rage (I only state this because I see it mentioned above); I wish more bands had a political voice (SOAD thank you!)
- If people want an amp to cop the sound of a Marshall; get a fucking Marshall and shut the fuck about it already. Please!!
- High gain beyond a certain point is useless gain; those who like it don't play live, mic their gear, or gig/jam.....ever.
- Clips are useless unless they're professionally recorded (nod to Lasse, Ola, Reza, and a few others out there)
- I don't understand the appeal of Charvels or other single pickup, single knob guitars; and that includes "Performance"
- Dimebag did nothing for me
- Amps that require pedals to better their tone are amps that don't cut [my] muster
- Fractal Audio has an absolutely amazing and incredible product, too bad its advocates are such cunts (generally speaking)
- Can't stand Tube Screamers, OverDrives, or Distortion pedals....whatsoever.
- I don't think much of Billy Gibbon's tone...sounds fizzy to me
- Rig-Talk is a good forum overall
- I can count on 1 hand the number of guitarists out there who truly have and continue to inspire me, and most of them are either unknown or unfamiliar to most people today.

Have a good night Folks!
Mojo

95 % of the guys on here are 100 % POSERS !!
Michael Schenker has one of the best tones and wrote some of the most memorable solos !!
Ritchie Blackmore makes a single coil and strat sound like no other !!
Tool should be called stool !! Their drummer is the only one worth listening to !!
Cookie Monster is for Sesame Street !!!
Wasp had some cool songs !!
Sweet water with Dudley Taft was the best 90's Seattle band !!
All theses players that play one million notes per second dropped down or seven string and chug chug are boring and do nothing !!!
Great guitar players can say more with one note !!
Last to the posers with all the flavor of the month and great gear , you still suck and so do your videos !!

This turned out awesome. What a fuckin hilarious read!

My turn:

Most of the guys RT worships haven't been relevant in 20 years or more.

Chasing a tone doesn't mean you know tone. I like what I like, what's fun to play. If it doesn't sound like something you'd use, guess what? Nobody cares, just you. Don't tell me to change this or that to suit you. Please.

Grunge killed hair metal and I love it for that reason alone. The only people that didn't like it were the guys that would have sucked Lynch's dick if he'd let them.

Relic guitars look better than new shiny guitars.

My $500 Fryette GP sounds better than your $5,000 Diezel. So does any Peavey version of a 5150, or any version of a Recto.

Guitars that are finished in poly look and feel tacky and cheap.

Whining about guys that sit at home and record clips is useless. I get a new piece of gear, I'm doing a clip. It's :25-2:00 long, and no one is making you listen to it. Everybody lately acts like if it's not professionally recorded then it's shit, but everyone watches every useless wanking NAMM video and comments on how great it is.

Other music counts. Just because it wasn't around in the 70s, doesn't mean it doesn't count.

Marshalls with greenbacks isn't the best tone ever.

$800 delay pedals is a company fucking you right up your ass and laughing while you praise them for it.

The thing where a guy posts a clip and you all say it's great and then 2 days later he says it's a modeler and you all say you could hear it? You're all liars. Every single one of you. You loved the tones and praised the guy but all of a sudden the EXACT SAME CLIP sounds completely different to you? Bullshit.

I'd rather listen to the first Rage album over any guitar guru all day every day. I can respect the fact that people like Guthrie and Petrucci put in the time to hone their craft, but it doesn't make it sound any better to me.

I couldn't give a fuck less about bands I wasn't there for if I tried. When VHI came out I think I was like 3. I'd much rather listen to Deftones than that album, or the Beatles, or AC/DC, or the Stones or anyone else that 'paved the way'.

The only people who think Dime's tone sucked are the guys buying $800 delay pedals and $5,000 amps to get a tone that EVH invented with like $600 worth of gear.

Rocky George never gets mentioned on guitar forums. Ever. Guitar forums suck just for that alone.

- I like the Bee Gees - Barry Gibb is one of the best song writers ever
- I like Frankie Vallie
- Steven Tyler is the most annoying singer ever
- Jimmy Page...I just don't get why anyone would like him
- Jack Black is the best singer ever

- Binding doesn't belong anywhere on any guitar
- MOP doesn't belong anywhere on any guitar
- Flying Vs are fucking goofy
- I've never liked LPs

Expensive delay pedals are expensive because they feature some super wacky presets that require a lot of DSP power. However most of these presets are entirely useless unless you play shoegaze or post rock. Most people here would probably get by just fine with a 300ms analog delay.

I'm surprised this hasn't come up yet:

Randy Roads was a mediocre player at best.

I agree. I think he has good musical taste as in forming melodies and groove but his recorded tone very much sucked.

Best topic ever!! I read the 5 pages and i was pretty amazed on all the comments!

Just need to say that Jimmy Page is waaaay overated!!

Cheers!
