just got this 58 custom shop. Didn’t know what to expect with the stock P90. I ordered a TV Jones PowerTron plus that came the same day as the guitar. Changed it immediately. And I must say. I’m blown away how good this sound!

Tuned to d std

Never tried a tv jones as well. New all for me today

Judging by the first pic, I can see you have a real foothold of the guitar....
HNGD!!! Juniors Rule!

I think the stock P90s in those are pretty good, actually. TV Jones is freaking awesome, though! HNGD!! Juniors rule!!

Sweet score. I had a regular Powertron in the bridge of an SG and it ripped. Nice PAFish vibe with a little more clang to it. Very articulate, and ballsy.

Did you even try the P90? About 35 years ago I had a 67 SG Special, those P90’s sounded killer but hated the narrow neck. A few years ago I had the chance to pick up a 55 LP Special…the stock P90’s sound awesome. Recorded half my cd project with it.

I couldnt believe how good the p90 is in my lp jr, so much so that i removed it to make sure it wasnt a different brand. Thing is damn near as good as my best humbuckers for high gain and amazing for cleans
I hit the same conclusion about 20 years ago. I wanted to try them out and I was impressed. I've put a few different P90s through trials and I've always liked them. Sure they hum but only at very high gain and you can mitigate it. I've tried the Gibson, the SD vintage (somewhere I read that Gibson uses the SD vintage, possibly bs or no longer done), the SD hot, SD hot magnet swap to alnico, and settled on the Fralin A4 with a mild overwind. They always sound articulate no matter what amp or boost I use. Clear top end without being harsh. Very balanced eq.
I picked up an Epi 56 gold top just to rock the P90s. The new Epi 56 copper top color looks cool also.

There are humbucker sized p90s also if you want to try them without needing a different routing. I have avoided the hum free styles because to me, that is changing the physics, and likely the sound.

When I got my Jr last year, I wanted to try a Mojotone Quiet Coil P90. It's a good pickup for sure but it's lacks a little of the personality P90s are known for.
I've had a Wolfetone Meaner sitting around for a long time so I converted it to a dogear base and put it in. It won't come out. His P90s are that good. The stock Gibson is very close though. Damn good factory pickup.

You guys should try a Powertron +!!
I just read up on the powertron plus. Thanks for posting this. Interesting stuff. I remember reading that the TV Jones filtertrons were so good that when you bought a USA Gretsch, those are the pickups they would install. I looked into buying a set for a Korean Gretsch but I ended up trading the guitar.
