Lynch trying a Diezel Hagen..... funny

You guys are hard to please. He's not doing a demo for us, it's for HIM.

George seems to be going through his "Jeff Beck" phase. Ditches the pick halfway through the vid, lower gain, more "vocal" trem use, note choice, etc. I'd say you have an seasoned player that's been *trying* to move away from his comfort zone. Good for him.

Funny that everyone wants Lynch to do some classic power chords. He's there doing what HE wants to do to get the feel of the amp. Maybe he always does that strange wammy stuff when he is evaluating how an amp performs? He doesn't necessarily have to do "Breaking The Chains" or In 'My Dreams' to evaluate an amp in front of a bunch of dudes with cell phone video rolling!

How much Koolaid do some of you guys drink? Or is it hooked up to an IV drip?

Lookpout, you'll get the Diezel guys stirred into an uproar. My last comment applies to anything from NAMM. Most gear demo's from there suck.

I could be wrong but I think Jim is referring to the 'noodling' being hard on the ears...not the amp.
Bingo! I really dig Lynch but that was like Guitar Center any day of the week . And granted he probably was just noodling and not out to give a kickass performance but ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :aww:

Yeah, I went back after your post and watched it again, this time with my fanboi glasses off and could see the non-kickassness of that vid   I

+1 I hear ya.

Seemed like he was fighting that amp the whole time. Maybe it's just me.

+1 I felt that too.

The last two times I saw him live he seemed to be fighting everything in his rig, from guitars to amps. I loved his playing in the late 80s and early 90s, but I just really haven't liked much about his output for the past ten years. Its like he doesn't want to be who he is anymore... Come back George, come back!

And no, I don't want to hear more of breaking the chains... Lynch used to be a very fluid player with a seriously wicked legato style. I'd like that guy back.

I don't know how anyone can judge the real tone of that amp from that clip. When the camera moved off of George to the cab it was better but honestly a shitty recording altogether.

1st thought - George, that is obnoxious overuse of the whammy bar.
Kinda sounded to me that he was wanting a vintagey plexi-ish tone dialed in. Sounded like he was wanting to hear a certain sound but just wasn't feeling it. Just sounded like a lot of wanking around. Definitely went into a Beck style in the 2nd half. Always liked GL, but nothing impressive here. Take off the stupid fucking gloves, man!

Agreed. If someone told me this wall all I could get out of this head, I'd avoid it like the plague. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y3sAtER9Fk

Fortunately, it sounds much better in person.

No concerns Gentlemen, Goerge is a great guy.
We shared the NAMM booth 2011 with him.
Here is a pic of his "green Herbie"

Maybe this is just the dicking around that George does to test an amp and identify certain tones and characteristics? And sadly for us it isn't the first 5 tracks of Dokken's "Tooth and Nail" album (which is what I would play if I was George)?

I know when I try a new amp I play the intro riffs to four classic songs I know (none of them Dokken songs, sorry George!) and two of my own licks to hear if it sounds how I "like" +/-, after that I basically do something similar to the noodling around George does here which, as was already pointed out, pretty much sounds like a Saturday afternoon at Guitar Center. :D

Don't care for lynch at all. Hagen rules though!!!
I had to stop at this post as I care not to read the rest of them. This post by cujo sums it up for me.

As for IntenseJim, ain't no kool-Aid issues here m'man, the Diezel, like any other highend boutique'centric amp, will have its fans and its detractors. I, for one, completely groove to the feel of a Diezel. I love 'em. But I've had a few cats try out my VH4S and Hagen and they couldn't groove to 'em, just like I couldn't groove to their Mesas, VHTs and a couple others.

As for palm mutes - I bet the gloves offer a totally new spectrum of sonic possibilities in the world of palm mutes... We should probably as Tag his opinion on this matter.

Mo

I was referring to Lynch.

Re the amp, ditto on judging amps at NAMM and/or from iPhone videos. Not a good idea.

When I was a young player I use to play amps at guitar stores like I was auditioning for something. I just didn't know any better.

Now, when I demo an amp, I'm sure the kids around me are judging me to be a hack (they may be right), but I spend my time listening to how the amp sounds playing CHORDS.

That's what the amp will be doing most of the time. Open, ringing chords, palm muted, chugging, etc. I also try out pinch harmonics on all strings, all over the neck. It probably sounds like a mess, but I need those questions answered from an amp when I try it out.

Lynch was clearly noodeling here...also looked like he really didnt feel like playing and was just checking out an amp just like any other guy there. George is 57 years old and is still just a guitar player like most of us looking for good tones. He's had a long career and has influenced more people than he's given credit for. People are so quick to critique and judge every little thing about other players these days.

The biggest problem I see around here is so much expectation for anyone (on a youtube clip) to be 100% and perfect everytime there's a video. If not, there are so many useless "negative" comments that ruin threads most of the time...gets old after awhile!

I recently watched an interview with Steve Lukather who talked about the same thing... He said he was sick and tired of all the negative remarks about him or other players he knows (on youtube)...who are video recorded at a gig, namm, or small show they sit in on and all people talk about are mistakes or bad tone....

Someone once asked Dimebag about the differences of practicing and playing live or on record. His response was that it did not matter where he was or what he was playing, he gave it 110% of his effort all of the time. through 1x5" marshall practice amps or through 6 stacks on stage, it did not matter.

If you suck and you do it on purpose then there are three reasons. you've injured yourself. you dont care to put the effort in. or you need more practice.

Go hard or go home. Always been how i have played, i wouldnt expect a god damn thing less from someone making a living out of it.

Seemed he was fighting the guitar more than the amp. Not an amp for me but I think the gloves, Guitar and player have a lot more issues and not the amp. From what I have seen from other players GL is doing more harm in that vid for diezils. GL seemed better back in the Dokken days and to me is just going down hill. Come on how old is he and he is dressing like a teen on 21 jump street and holding on to a 20 something year old guitar model of a past dream. Kinda pitiful :aww: :gethim:

I agree. I know GL is a great guitar player and all, but I have never really been into his playing much. This video was a little awkward for me to watch.

I hack around as well when I'm trying out an amp. Looking for how it feels, dynamics. Totally different than playing with a band. I'm not trying to impress while trying out an amp.

However, fingerless gloves and whammy dives have nothing to do with trying out an amp. Just sayin' :D

this thread has officially de-railed!

the dude was trying out an amp for goodness sake!...who gives a shizer what he played...as far as i can tell, it sounded fine. was it guitar heroics, no. was it a dude wanking around with an amp...yep. it's a namm video....just like 1trillion other namm videos, i'd say for me, like Danyeo said,it's nothing i'd use to judge to buy or not buy either GL's music or a hagen amp.

Certainly, i'm not going to run out and get some gloves and cut the fingers off them and wear them when i'm playing, but....maybe the dude has circulatory problems and needs to keep his hands warm or something or he can't play as well...i don't know, or want to know. WHO CARES. i'm not a GL fanboi in the least, though i did like his one instructional video, and must admit, for sure he KNOWS tone...so, instead of detracting and criticising and "screwing in the lightbulb the typical guitarist way, where we all stand around and say we could do it better", maybe we should be paying attention and taking notes. guitarwise, 57 years old george lynch > me. period.

what planet are we living on here?
some of you guys are brutal man!
