One piece maple necks sound best from the Fender or Superstrat camp IMO. I find the sound of a rosewood board on a Strat a bit dull and scooped sounding. A maple fingerboard just has this attack and richness in the upper midrange that can't be beat. Look at Hendrix - started with rosewood board strat and towards the end of his career made the switch to maple.
