Did he say why?
No

But it is the same reason as every other company isn't capable of production at this time. The company they have been getting transformers from is out of business. They can't get parts. Shipping is messed up worldwide. It's not just Mesa. Lots of companies are having similar problems.

R. Smith didn't want to see his company go down in flames. C-19 was the writing on the wall. He didn't have many optiions so he cashed in his chips.
Can't say i blame him a bit.

I went to order a set of wheels from Cragar last week. They told be that they're paying three times as much for materials, supply is short, and can't guarantee an order completion date.

I dig these...

I'd bet the same holds true with any large home appliance right now too.

It's a safe assumption that it's not custom parts that are short on supply now, but the
things that most all of these products all use - raw metals, packaging, plastics, etc.

I'd imagine it's intensely competitive for the buyers at different companies trying to get this stuff.

We are all still suffering the supply chain effects of the trade war/tariffs from the last 4 years.
And there is no clear picture when it will be over.
So much for America first.
Not being political, just a fact.
