Metal Zone

Cool.

On the Custom side, does it respond similarly with the EQ’s at noon? I read that the Waza has less noise..,,but to be honest, the one I’ve had for decades didn’t have any noticeable noise with the level around d 1-2 o’clock.
it’s quiet for sure! I’m usually boosting s jcm 800 style - eq is crazy versatile

welcome to the club lol. try my settings into clean channel as well

and that makes no sense to me given the choice of modern high gain amps. It should be easier to find an amp that makes the soundss you want.

as I said, clean boost / EQ can provide different flavors. Dirt pedals will color the gain structure of the amp = the wrong amp for the gain you want. I guess it's cheaper than having multiple amps, but there are probably more than a few choices of modern high gain amps that will give you the sound you want.

That's why I have several amps, and don't use dirt pedals. Each amp I have does what I want it to do vs one amp and a collection of dirt pedals. I'd rather spend the money on an amp not dirt pedals.

I'd only use dirt pedals if I was playing live and needed a variety of tones with the smallest amount of gear. But just playing at home these days, I can have several amps that I like and use for different flavors.

Dirt pedals are anachronistic holdover from the days of mid/low gain amps from a bygone era. Old habits die hard. :D

i have about 20 heads here, old and new, and nothing going strait in is going to sound or feel like a metalzone boosted recto, or my Laney and SD1, my Krank with my Chiron or whatever combos i like :dunno: Even if there was an amp that did the metalzone recto thing, how is buying another amp easier or more practical than just using a pedal?

just know you can go from great to god awful sounding just by blowing on the knobs, but if you like to tweak there are surprisingly good tones to be had into a good clean channel. im gonna bust mine out too

I would only ever use it for death metal sounds, but the para eq is really, really useful for dialing in super gross brutal stuff.

It works way better as a boost (or even a preamp) than it does as an actual distortion pedal.

I don't listen to or enjoy any of the famous bands that use them, but many do.

had the OG v1 and ran it into an absolutely crazy ghetto live rig (od250->mtz->fender ss harvard reverb II combo lihe out-> alesis quad gt—-ending in a 1974 ampeg v4 half stack.

i wish i still had my old recordings of that rig because against all odds it sounded amazing.

didn't say practical; I buy amps for their sounds. if I need a dirt pedal to make it sound good or different, it's the wrong amp for me. If it doesn't sound good or provide tonal options I want (2+ channels), it's the wrong amp for me.

I usually use an EQ pedal with single channel amps; I have different amps for different sounds, from cleans to high gain, so no need for dirt pedals.

nothing wrong if you like dirt pedals for whatever reason; I think they're a holdover of times past which I don't have any interest in. I want my core sound to come from the amp without a dirt pedal.

im not sure how wanting different flavors is any kind of holdover?? it seems like an unnecessary limiting rule to me, much like saying im never gonna put a topping on a pizza because it should taste great on its own. some days im in the mood for bacon or pepperoni, some places i love their buffalo chicken where i dont care for their regular pie. My Laney isnt my favorite amp strait in, but boosted it becomes a monster. ill never understand making rules about tone

The Metal Zone has its place in some contexts for me, but I would never be able to use it as my primary tone. Maybe I was trying it with the wrong amps?

I have one sitting in the box. Every time I plug it in, back in the box it goes😂
It's on a lot more albums than people think it is though
Yeah it's really popular as a boost for the more caveman/flat brimmed hat+tattoos+flannel death metal and hardcore bros. Mostly because of CC. I hate their tones and think they're kind shitty, but lots of people love that and are influenced by it.

I think the EQ section of the metal zone is actually really good, especially for buzzy fizzy death metal tones where it's tough to get it to cut (because you set the gain max and you don't even have any transients left)

there was a time when dirt pedals were needed to push low/mid gain amps into higher gain.

that time has passed.

we have high gain amps now.

I prefer to get my gain from my amps.

I may use an EQ to push (clean boost) to get more input gain and/or EQ to get different tones.

Dirt pedals are not required.

I remember reading a review of the Dual Rectifier once and the person said, "I can get an arguably better tone from my Boss Metal Zone! When that's the case, something is wrong." Ouch.

This makes no sense to me. It’s not a matter if the amp “needs” it or not, it’s a matter of having different flavors which may work better with a particular guitar, cab or just a different flavor to fit a song better.
Seems to be a trend...https://www.rig-talk.com/forum/threads/metal-zone.337405/#post-4573278
That's like saying Cannibal Corpse did use the wrong Amp for their music. Surprisingly they still use Rectifiers but with a ST8Pro+

yes a continuing trend to use dirt pedals, it's a $10M+ industry, and probably over 1,000 dirt pedal models to choose from.

dirt pedals are more popular than ever...

follow the herds

not that there's anything wrong with that. just keep one tube amp, and do the rest with dirt pedals...who needs different amps? :D

Seeing how there's a gazillion companies making and selling dirt pedals, mass produced to boutique, I'd say you're in the minority with your .02 cents.

good, following herds was never my thing...

if everyone's doing it, it must be right.

and that was my point; so many dirt pedals / makers, so many to choose from...it's big business; even with so many high gain tube amp options.

For the price of one good tube amp head, you can have around 50+ different dirt pedals, each making one amp sound different. Save space, have more tones, at lest cost...but many of us still have several or more amps.

amp gain > pedal gain.

IMO.

enjoy your dirt pedals; I don't need them or use them. that's all.

I sometimes think only Graham Coxon of Blur has been able to use obnoxious distortions in ways that sound decent.

How about Gilmour or Corgan using muffs for their main tones?? Are they using the wrong amp?
