Pass the same guitar back and forth with a friend and don't change a thing.
Tone is in the hands to a large extent.
Even funnier are guys who have a Metro Amp....have a net hack fuck it up with shit mods.....and still think they own a Metro Amp.

Nothing a Metro will do no decent Marshall or clone will do.
They are recieving attention because grown men hope to attain a certain tone they wouldn't know what to do with even once they attain it.

I can tell it's Lynch playing when he blows a lead thru any amp with high gain... but it IS NOT the same tone!
See the difference?
Why did EVH choose to use that ONE Marshall head to record with for decades? If tone's all in his fingers, he coulda used anything!!??

He loved how that amp "sounded" even with his technique remaining the same, he could NOT get "that tone" outta any other amp!

That just annoys the crap outta me. Somebody says "tone is in the fingers" and somebody comes back with "ok, make an LP sound like a banjo then!" It's retarded. I've never seen anybody make any claim like that. The closest I've seen is Ed talking about getting similar tones out of different amps, which really isn't all that outlandish.

I just find it kind of odd...guitar players are the only people I've ever known who try and draw these hard lines between gear and tone and technique. Ask an old sax player if the PLAYER has an inherent tone aside from the gear and what do you think they'll say? For some reason, guitar players have a stick up their ass about the gear. I guess because there's so many gear choices available and people get their own self-image very much caught up in the gear that they play.

Then Why couldn't eddie get the same tone on every album? Surely you will agree that there are differances in tone between album to album. Id be willing to bet it was because he used different gear especially after his main marshall started fading.

The fact of the matter is that Ed will sounds like Ed style wise but his tone changed and his 5150 tones sound nothing like his old Marshall tone.

Well the first four albums all have the same core tone IMO. There are differences between them, sure, but they still sound close to me.

At the same time I see what you're getting at. But would it really suprise you if you Eddie's Marshalls were mostly stock? In Eddie's last GW interview the guy tried to get him to admit his Marshall was special, and he said, "It could have been any amp..."

Now whether I beleive that is whole 'nother ball of wax...

At the same time, I would love to play one of those Metro amps that have been tweaked to sound like the brown sound. But like I said, most of the clips I hear nailing the brown sound, sound better to me than the actual brown sound.

I know Im probably alone on that one though.

I'm in no hurry to see any nude guys play Unchained. But if there was a list, he would definitely be way, way, way down low on that list. Yikes. Forget brown. There would be red friction burns everywhere.

well there are things going on behind teh scenes that you don;t hear on the boards. All of them have pretty much a similar spec so there is a formula to this IMHO.
