Michael Nielson agrees with me: the FTT Flight Time is the best delay pedal ever created

I guess the analog headroom and general analog block quality would be the primary issue.

Looks like the headroom is 9dBu lower than a 2290 (or Eclipse), so already

Yeah you aren't going to ever get exactly 2290 tones with a pedal, not without full size components

It's just as close as you're going to get in a pedal format

Naw man, the reason I keep harping on it because what makes analog delays sound like analog delays is literally that they degrade the high end

surely you can understand why that sounds absolutely ridiculous when you say

When the entire point of an all analog delay is.... to ruin the high end of a good tube tone in a pleasing way

Does that make sense?
I don't use delays for other reasons. I understand what you are saying....digital delay more accurately replicates the high end. But it does so at the expense of adding harsh digital artifacts. Not something I'm interested in.

I was watching this earlier and thought it was weird timing because I have been watching a lot of 2290 videos lately. I got my 2290p pedal out and have been playing it a lot lately and comparing it with my Boss SDE-3000D. I keep finding there is something about the 2290p sound that works better behind high gain than the Boss. I even like the Flashback 2 a lot.

These Free the Tone pedals look pretty cool also. What is the main differences between the Flight Time and Future Factory?

Is it expensive? Yes.

Is it complicated? Yes.

Does it sound like god? Ohhhh yes.

Does it look like the cockpit of a jet fighter from top gun? Also yes.

Michael Nielson joins me, @itsgoodnow , and a few others in the chad FTT Flight Time enjoyer club

Wasn't that Steve King's favorite too or am I thinking of some other FTT pedal?

He uses the future factory, I believe, which is an excellent pedal as well, and probably better option if you need stereo

They sound slightly different too

That biggest difference is the future factory is stereo

Its kind of weird because it looks like the FF does a lot more than the FT, but it is less expensive.

IMO it doesn't sound as close to a legit 2290 :dunno:

That's just my opinion, but it is what it is, and that's why I prefer the flight time - that's the sound I wanted in a pedal format

I did like the 2290 TC pedal but the Flight Time is just better and closer to the sound of the rack unit. And the 2290 sound is my all time, no doubt, favorite lead tone delay of all time without question

So, would you say the FF is more of a generic clear digital delay sound, where the FT is more of a 2290 inspired delay?

I have been doing a lot of delay comparing the last few days, so this kind of stuff has just been on my mind. Yeah, I keep coming back to the TC sound in general for delay. It seems to sit behind the tone well, and the modulation is amazing. I keep finding Boss wants to sit on top of the tone more and make everything turn into a wall of mush. I have also compared my Digitech DL-8, and Source Audio Collider, which are good also. Both seem better than the Boss SDE with high gain.

Yes, the flight time is very clearly meant to get really close to that 2290 studio rack gear tone, whereas the future factory is similar but closer to like a DIG or something like that (just imo, of course)

They are both really good, but the flight time is just by far the closest I've been able to find at nailing that 2290 "studio 80s metal lead" type sound

As far as delays go, in my experience it very much depends on the sound that you're going for - the boss is great from what I understand, if what you're really after is the EVH tone. It does that in spades. That isn't really my jam, specifically, so i'm not the best person to ask about it, although I've played them a half dozen times. It also has a bunch of routing, wet dry, etc options that are killer.

But for me, by far and away the most important thing is the core sound of the effect itself, and that's why I vastly prefer the flight time - it just completely nails the 2290 thing, on an even higher level than the TC pedal version

Honestly we're at a point in history when we are spoiled for choice with pedal options, and i feel lucky that there's something out there that gets as close to a racked 2290 as possible without actually having to cart a rack around (again) - that sound IS my lead sound, at least with my band, and every drawback it has is just dwarfed by how good its core tone is.

I have been playing with using a slight delay for a high gain tone in the background instead of a light reverb just for some ambience in the background. Yeah, when you want to turn them up and make them stand out better they both work great. It is when you want them to be more subtle that I notice that difference. That is just something I was messing with over the weekend.

I do love the 2290p, but it is a little less cool in mono, and of course it is huge and not analog dry through. I like the Flashback 2 a lot also, which I think is good at that sound in mono as well.

Anyways, just some random thoughts after listening to delay pedals all weekend, lol.

Yep, i've owned both of those and have close to the same feelings - I love the toneprint, and the flashback is super underrated.

i like the alter egox4 alot, too, which is an excellent lower priced delay pedal that flies way under the radar

And yes that's the thing with the 2290p that annoyed the shit out of me too, the no analog dry through, I would need to take 4 pedals off of my board to put it on lol

I don't discriminate on brand or price with pedals, just sound, and in this case for me at least, the flight time is just everything i wanted the 2290 pedal to be

Looks like the inside of Doc’s Delorean.. but it’s actually really simplified & just showing you everything/giving you total control with the bpm/ms sync, & the way it apparently finds tempo can come in handy. 🤔 Expensive but convenient precision is prettyyyy niceee. Been wanting to try a moogerfooger 104 that’s a different beast tho.. Most recent delay I’ve been messing with is a Fairfield circuitry- meet Maude.. really weird- very fun.

Just realized this is the dude that made me want a kitty hawk Quattro lol. He has really nice gear, & is an ATC guy 😎 man of class 🤌🏽

I have 2 of the Plethora X1 pedals, which I like a little better than the original Flashback 2 (which I also have). They can be any of the Toneprint pedals, including the Flashback and Alter Ego. I need to try more of the Alter Ego settings, because many people seem to like those. I like that you can see the values on the little screen (dial in specific time), and I noticed it can also handle a hotter signal than the original Flashback 2.

Michael Nielson will make you want to buy anything he demos, lol.

Right..😂 dude does awesome reviews. This was this first video I ever saw from him:

My bad for going off topic, but it’s too good to not share. Killer tone, toan? However you guys say it..

This is one of the handful of cases where I know the pedal he's demoing sounds as good as it does in the video though :ROFLMAO:

He DOES make everything sound good though

me like.

I see it now! Video kept going black-had to load it in full screen. Well Sheeeet! Burnin up that fretboard 🔥 must of had a really tight short delay to thicken up the solo? Idk but it sounds dope. Good shit 🤘🏽
