Most overrated Guitarist on the Internet

I know one thing, I’m fairly content with my job, it’s really fucking stressful at times and often depletes any physical or mental energy I have, but I work for a great company and they pay me enough to buy guitars. But if any one of those YouTubers wanted to trade with me so I could go play gear for a living and make demos of it, I’d do it in a fucking heartbeat. No question, no hesitation, I’m there.

I don’t really watch gear demos to find original guitar playing or virtuosos, that’s what I listen to music for. Gear demos aren’t really the avenue for that stuff as they need to appeal to the general population of guitar players. There are certainly personalities I don’t dig or I may not agree with their general opinions, so I just don’t watch ‘em.

That said, there are players I gravitate towards because their playing crosses paths with mine and I dig the tones; Ola and John Cordy. Opposite ends of the spectrum, but I love chugging metal shit and I love Eric Johnson-esque tones. Win/win for me.

This is the way a Resonable guitar player behaves. All these dudes hating on people that use YT as a means of Income/Day Job are just rediculous. I WISH I would of started something back when i first got into Youtube. i wouldn't have to sit in a desk with customers screaming at me on the phone all the time.

Kaiser is a special guitarist who is a powerful adept within the animal
Kingdom. Turns out all this time, he was playing in the languages of the forests, oceans, deserts and mountains, at one with all creatures, both great and small!

Watch this video, as he is on an arctic expedition. He brings a guitar deep under the treacherous and hazardous waters of the glaciers and proceeds to communicate with the creatures in the language of the oceans. To us, its always sounded like gibberish and the highest order of useless guitar wanking ever accomplished, but to the creatures of the oceans, it’s their language and it calms and comforts them. Watch as a powerful adept of the oceans displays a total mastery and speaks to loyal and trusting subjects.

Whoa…

That is great hahaha

Henry Kaiser is the greatest Dumble Player ever. I wonder how Howard "tuned" his famous amp to pair so well with Kaiser's playing?

I’m not mad at any of these guys but some of the observations are pretty funny and I doubt any of them give a shit that we’re laughing at them. They’ve got plenty of people kissing their asses, I don’t think they’re going to go off themselves because we’re criticizing them.

It’s funny how Youtube guitarists have to really stretch out some stupid topic for a video idea. I’ve noticed some of them recently have done the same kind of “WOW I tried a cRaZy new tuning called C#” video. Like 10 minutes on just tuning down like they discovered something amazing.

It’s also kind of funny how you can just guess what kind of stuff a guy is going to play based on how he looks and what his video presentation is. Of course this Paul Davids guy is going to play triads on a strat like 99% of the time. He puts a lot of effort into his video production but it’s almost a little creepy with the mood lighting and whispering voice…is this about guitar or are you trying to seduce someone? And why are you always wearing a jacket indoors?

9-10 minutes is the minimum amount of time a youtube video needs to be to get the algorithm to start putting the more profitable ads up during them.

That's why all those should-have-been-3-minute videos get stretched out like that.

If the beer doesn't have the typical "shock/disgust/orgasm" face on the label, nobody will buy it!

I’m not sure how to even evaluate whether or not a YT guitarist is overrated. I will say that as annoying as a lot of them are, props to anyone who can make a living off of playing the guitar in any way.

That being said, that Fluff guy’s playing is very boring to me. Very one dimensional, imho. If I had to choose, then I would assume he’s overrated, that is if anyone actually thinks he’s good. He’s very mediocre, imho.

I know there is a lot of hate towards Rhett skull and Rabea or whatever, but the audacity to create and keep adding content to try and connect with an audience is worth SOME merit, no? I find some videos neat or inspiring in the sense of creating music, versus their prowess of the instrument or skill. Know what I mean? Maybe I am in the wrong thread LOL I don't hate them, I don't say their playing is good enough to warrant praise either...
I don’t think anyone hates them dude. I think Rhett runs people the wrong way.

Someone already stated that it’s show business. I think a lot of people are used to well known guitarists either being a member of a big or successful band, or are players of the highest caliber. Rhett doesn’t fall under either category and people wonder what the deal is.

Either way, Rhett has killer gear, has a ton of great endorsements, is building a world class studio at his house, makes fat cash, and it all stems from his YouTube channel. He is stoked.

It now comes down to this: are you charismatic, likable, funny, or you are able to piggyback off of an already popular YouTuber. rabea is definitely a technically proficient guitarist. But to me, his playing is sterile, doesn’t have good feel, (best way to gauge feel for me is if a player does a bend and you think to yourself, “whoaaaa!,” when you hear it. Guys like page, EVH, Navarro, Corgan, could do a bend and you could hear sorrow, pain and joy all in the same note. Just amazing, Rabeas bend is simply a bend.)and not much character. In the past you could usually tell what player was playing a lead or riff as they all had distinct styles.

Rob found rabea in a store or coffee shop and immediately gave him a signature model with Chapman, so all robs fans jumped on the rabea train at the suggestion of their hero, the monkey lord. Right off the bat, he had a HUGE following.

Basically, a lot of people still expect their guitar heroes to be players who can actually play at a high level, or do it in a clever way while writing killer riffs, leads and songs, and look like a bad ass or super cool/unique in the process.

Times have changed and the prerequisites to be a guitar star have also. Things like hard work and perseverance take a back seat to charisma, humor and likability.

Ok, I’m rambling and will stop.

Agreed, well said. I’d just say that I think those guys today do work hard & persevere, just not as much in guitar playing or writing music itself, but more so at networking and getting recognition. I think also those guys back then did have charisma, humor & likability going for them too (in general at least), but maybe didn’t need to rely/depend on it as much as the guys today

I can’t wait to get my channel going and you all can hate me more than now, I might even shout you out if you say something super offensive I really like to extend my video and make more $$$

Thanks for providing your 2 cents, appreciate it. I can understand where some get rubbed the wrong way, especially where the learning ones craft has gone to the back burner vs being a TV personality for youtube land.

People just need to chill out, it is a "make belief" world online and social media will always be like this... if it really makes you that angry, life is not worth being angry just change the channel lol

I wish more players developed their craft more, but at least we still have players right? The bar is set VERY low to be considered a "musician" or "artist" nowadays...
