my brain hurts, reading recording hardware info sucks...

I think the Dell 30" is HD and as Tom Stated it is $1180 now due to a new model just launched.

From the site.....

To fully utilize your new 3007WFP-HC monitor and enjoy the ultra-high resolution settings, your PC must have a dual-link DVI-D graphics card that supports 2560x1600 resolution. These dedicated high-end video cards are offered with select XPS desktops and Dell Precision workstations, or separately through the Dell.com Electronics & Accessories store. A high-quality video card is necessary for you to take advantage of all the 30-inch monitor's features, including high-definition viewing. Please make sure that your PC either has or can support a dual-link DVI-D graphics card before purchasing this monitor.

So you need a very nice video card.

Jan 15th is MWSF. That's when Steve Jobs announces the new products for the new year.

Dude - I know Jobs announces SOME of the new products at MWSF, but you are missing what I'm saying. Traditionally, Apple doesn't use MWSF to talk about the professional workstation (Mac Pro) line. Read here:

Mac Pro Rumor

So as far as I'm concerned, new Mac Pros on Jan 15th is still just a rumor, while I agree that there will be an update at some point in '08. As I said, I can't wait that long for it though...

Did you order the Mac Pro yet? Just wondering because they're going to be updated come Jan. 15th.

I have not, however, the Jan. 15th Mac Pro update is just a rumor at this point that some are debunking for a variety of reasons (unless you have some info that I don't and if so - DO TELL!!!). I'm going to wait just in case though...

Good lookin' out though, man! :)

Steve

No, it's a fact that they'll be updated. It's been LONG LONG LOOOONNNGGGG overdue for the update. It's been longer than any other item Apple has. They also recently bought up all the processors. Trust me on this - there WILL be an update. :) If you know someone who has a student ID, you can get 7% to 10% off the computer. Also, their monitors will most likely be updated as well come MWSF.

The discount for students is $200 on computers. I bought my MacBook Pro when my wife was going to school.

Might go with the 30" Apple Cinema HD Display though...

Steve

I wouldn't waste my money on the Mac Display unless the extra USB and FW ports are necessary. You can get a Dell 30" for $1200 now. I haven't had any issues running it with my MacPro and the quality is just as good.

Cool - I'll check into the Dell... Is it HD?

Steve

To be honest, I'm not sure what that means with computer monitors. HD for TVs is 1920x1080 and this is 2560x1600. Basically, it supports the same resolution as the Mac display for 2/3rds of the price.

The new line of Intel dual cores comes out January 20th, and then a new line of quad cores in March, so it'd only make sense if they announced new Mac Pros on the 15th.

Oh yeah, the Pros use Xeons for whatever weird reason. I forgot about that. The equivalents of all of those to the desktop versions that still aren't out have been out since November.

Out of curiosity, what is really the point of getting a Pro? Unless you want the most super high end computer possible, to me, it looks like they just cost an ass load because they have extra expensive processors that aren't really intended for that use.

That's pretty much the exact reason to get a Mac Pro. You're mainly paying for the processor in that machine. They finally have decent vid. cards in them, though. Those old-ass GeForce 7xxx series were just ridiculous on such a high end machine. Then again, in a couple months, the 9xxx series are coming out, right?

Updates came a week earlier than expected, so I believe that MWSF will most likely be based around the mobile theme, along with the ultra-portable Mac.

Maximum track count, highest plug-in count, ultra low latency recording when combined with Apogee Symphony PCI-e!!!! Count me in!

I think most of the hobbyist recording guys here use host processing as opposed to dedicated DSPs. I know that on my MBP I start to max out at twenty something tracks and that's where my MacPro starts to shine. It really is a beast and I didn't realize how powerful it was until I started using my laptop for our recordings.

Jesus that new Mac Pro's numbers are off the charts.

My recordings are shitty now, I can only admagine the crap I could produce with that

Did you guys ever see that info posted on the Digidesign forums, I believe? It was when the Mac Pros were fairly new and some cat was trying to bring the machine to it's knees and had a really hard time. Something like running full track counts with over a hundred instances of Digi-verb, or something like that. I was trying to find the post to link to, but it's not coming up.

And, that's before the new processors and ability to add up to 32GB of memory... I wanna send a speced out one to my boss as a good purchasing joke. :)

I was actually going to get a MacBook Pro if they were updated come MWSF. I decided I'm now going to get a Mac Pro since they come standard with the dual quad-core setup. It just sucks that you have to wait 3 to 5 weeks if you order it with the 8800.

You guys are missing the point. Those use nothing but upper end Xeons. They cost an ass load. Having a high track and plug-in count doesn't explain the purpose of that. It's only better than what a normal desktop processor setup can do if you get one of the double quad-core ones, and I don't know wtf even calls for that, other than an actual server, as those processors were intended to be used for, but there's always stuff out there just for people who absolutely must have the best money can buy. On top of that, they use ECC memory, as if they are LITERALLY meant to be servers.

My processor was $75. I'm presently running 50 tracks and over 100 plug-ins on a project, many of them Waves compressors and reverbs that eat up CPU. You don't need a $3,000 computer in this day and age just to get a song done.

So unless there's something I'm missing, you're just getting raped. Even iMacs can come with the "extreme" processors, which already exist solely for people who just want to spend an insane amount of money on the stupid fastest thing possible to begin with. The whole Xeon/server format isn't making sense to me, even as far as the "enthusiast" department goes.

Um, I run a server.... Multiple ones to be exact.

Well that's nice for you and all, but pretty much totally unrelated.

And even so, I don't even have to guess to know that whatever you've got going on it isn't amazon.com and you don't need that just for it to function, as you're clearly getting away with something lesser right now.

And because I'm barely sqeaking by with a 4 year old computer, I shouldn't bother with getting a new computer? It almost sounds to me like you're jealous or something. Does it honestly matter to you if someone has or doesn't have the ability to utilize the power of the machine?

Yes, I'm jealous. You got me.

Actually, I'm just wondering why people keep replying, but not answering the question.
