NAD (Marshall JVM 410H - now w/clip)

Had a QR at the same time I got my JVM.
Needless to say, the JVM is still here.
I have found that almost every JVM comes out of the factory biased cold(very cold) and has crappy preamp tubes.
A simple preamp re-tube and bias makes the amp a beast.
I also installed a choke to replace the resistor, which took about 10 minutes.
I did not like the C83 mod. It thinned out the amp at high volumes but sounded great at low volumes.
The JVM is still a force to be reckoned with compared to most Marshalls.
Just needs a little tweaking.
Bottom line is that it is still a JCM800.
It just happens to have 12 channels, the best clean Marshall ever put out, and can hang with the best modded marshalls for way less money.
And I could care less about PCB construction since it is done right and has never given me a problem.
And you can nail the VM sounds with the JVM if you are wondering.

Sorry to bump this - but I did have time to make a little (mellow-ish) lead tone sample clip, no need to start a new thread.

This is still stock tubes, picking up new ones tomorrow morn, can't wait! Also kept it pretty raw, no effects other than verb via a plugin afTer tracking. No boost pedal either. Just wanted something simple to use as a starting/reference point. If this were an actual tune I could see adding some delay. Guitar > amp > cab > 2 mics > Profire610 > Cubase 5. Suggestions are ALWAYS welcome (that's why we're here ;)).

Great tone, playing, and clip.
What mics and speakers?

Thanks DJ! :)

Appreciate that AA, nice to read your input being an experienced JVM owner. I've read about the mods and think I'll pass on them though, only because I'll never be mistaken for a handyman, lol! Plus, a good tube swap should suit me as I'm already really happy with it! My bias was also cold, 60mv - I perked it up to 70 and it was a significant improvement. I'm off soon to pick up 5 new EH preamp tubes (going with V1 12AX7, V2 12AU7, V3 12AU7, V4 12AX7, V5 12AX7) after doing a little digging around. That seems like it should give me a good balanced result.

The details for this test clip: So-Cal (Super Dist/PAF Pro) > JVM > Egnater 2x12 cab (sm57/e906 dual miking a single spkr - Eminence SM25) > PC. Added verb afterwards (Lexicon PCM Native vst).

Regarding the QR - I can see where things are headed having both of these amps now for a week. The QR is tighter, brighter, little more open and raw. The JVM is a bit warmer, tiny bit more loose, more sag, slightly compressed...so yeah, easier to play leads with. Should be a nice sonic match - the QR under, the JVM over, doing leads. And that's not to say each can't cover the same ground, just that they seem suited for slightly different roles with their similiar yet unique enough voicings.

Excellent clip. Have you tried the JVM with your OD808? I fell in love again with my JVM after purchasing an MXR classic OD. It tightens up the amp quite a bit and lets you dial in more resonance to really make it thump. I have never tried a QR so I have no idea if it can get as tight as it. There is no cure for the JVM's compression but I like that aspect of it.
