I just sold my blue stripe and bought a 2008 Mark IV long head. The Mark iii is cool, but it’s just too damn aggressive.
Can you please explain? Isn’t aggression a good thing for a metal tone? That is, if that’s what you were shooting for. I ask because I’d love to try a Mark III or IV, but don’t know much about them.
I totally agree with you... My blue stripe is one aggressive beast! Too bright when recording but it sounds glorious in the room! I can nail the old metallica tone in spades. Also, I use some nice Nos 12ax7 to tame the brightness

Have you tried lowering the lead gain to about 4, and max out treble and lead drive? I just tried this and it’s way tighter for me. I robbed this setting from YouTube and it’s just what I was looking for.
Yeah I actually do that a lot!

Sotoprince, your clips sound killer. Are those all straight in?
Thx dude! Yeah man listen to this! Low volume bedroom playing
That sounds great. I see you have a Mark III and IV. Which do you prefer and why? How do those two amps differ? Total Mesa noob here, and would like to try one or the other sometime.

Before I played a mark IV, my blue stripe was the best sounding amp - preamp + power amp rig - I've ever had, and believe me I've owned a lot! Over the last years I've felt that it was too bright sounding, especially when recording using my Suhr reactive load+ torpedo CAB. I believe either of these two might have something to do with the overall brightness level when recording, but it's an undeniable fact that the mark III blue stripe gotta be one of the most aggressive - bright mesa amp ever! Anyway, I am now in the honeymoon period with my mark IV rev b, which is darker and more modern sounding. Also, there are so many tones available! The harmonics - mid gain - pentode -triode - presence pulled - can give lots of tone variations.

The point is that the mark III has a more vintage, raw tone, which can be closer maybe to the mark IIC+. Don't get me wrong though, the mark IV can be dialed to have a more vintage tone, but it's a bit more compressed and refined. I am going to do an A B test soon enough, but these 2 clips might help you get the idea.
I tried to dial them to sound similar but I think I should have dialed more bass - mark III

Pentode + mid gain + simul class = heaven!

DAMNNNNN..... This.

Non scooped settings here

And this.

This amp seems killer, congrats. Want.

Seems like it can come close to the MKiii and more. I used to own a JP2C, how would you compare the MK-IV to that?

Much appreciated! The problem is that these recordings really don't do justice! Well, ur right about that! The mark 4 can be dialed to sound similar to the mark 3!I have never played a j2pc but I ve listened to a clip where the mark 4 sounds much fuller. The j2pc sounded kinda boxy. I'm sure it sounds more compressed too!

Class A - Triode - Harmonics - Presence pulled = supposedly mark 2C+ settings

This post is absolutely killing me. I want a Mark IV or III bad. I just got a bonus this week and I should be spending it on responsible stuff but I find myself looking for a Mark series. I've thought about selling my Orthos for one. I love my Orthos but a Mesa Mark has been a bucket list amp. I know I would regret selling either one of my current amps but Im still tempted.

Your clips sound great man!

Much appreciated dude! Trust me, you can't go wrong either way! If you are looking for versatility and more modern tones, get the mark iv. Otherwise the mark 3 is a a more raw, vintage sounding amp. The red stripe is really close to the mark 2c, but the blue stripe is meaner and brighter

Yep, that's what I hear too; the JP2C in that clip sounds more boxy, almost nasal. It *does* cut nicely through the mix, but it's not a tone I'd strive for.

C# random chugging here - this time I placed the s9 close to the cab

I tried to dial them to sound similar but I think I should have dialed more bass - mark III

Alright, I preferred your Mark IV clip. Preferred it so much I just pulled the trigger on a Mark IVB combo! I’m not a combo guy, but the price was too good to pass up. Since we’re on lockdown, I’ve read and watched YT vids ad nauseam, so I’m pretty familiar with the layout and have somewhat of a clue how to dial it in. So what cabs, speakers do these jive with? Got any tips for dialing in this beast? I’ve wanted to try one of these for a long time. Looking forward to this one.

Nice to hear that dude! U won't be disappointed! I find it really easy to dial good tones as I have experience being a mark 3 owner. You can dial so many amazing tones! Lately I've been using tweed power harmonics triode class a and presence pulled out. This gives me a more vintage tone similar to the mark 2c. I don't scoop the mids as much as I did with my mark 3. The pentode and mid gain modes will give you more punch and gain. As for the rest of the settings I usually set the drive at 9 treble at 7 mids and bass at 2 and lead at 4. Presence pushed at 4 to 7 will give you more punch but pulled out is the more vintage type of sound

Cool, thanks man! Looking forward to trying that out. What speakers and cabs work best with these? What were they paired with new? Black Shadows?

Well, I am not an expert when it comes to speakers. It's all about the type of music ur into. For me, the t75s and v30s sound really good for the metal thing.
