NAD Monomyth Amplification 1974 JMP Black Sun

I have the Blood and Thunder mod on my ‘74 and it sounds a bit more vintage to my ears vs the Black Sun. It can sound more modern with the Blood switch flipped on though. There’s tons of usable gain on either. Just though I’d throw it out there for anyone who might be on the fence.

Yeah with the blood switch it did great with low tunings. I played stuff like Carcass, Amon Amarth, and other B standard tunings in that mode. With the other position I could easily play stuff like Mastodon, Alice in Chains, etc along with the other classic Marshall tones.

I got a JJ jr. off ZZounds with their payment plan after selling the Blood and Thunder amp and it went back pretty quickly. Not to say it wasnt a good amp but it didnt hold a candle to the 74 and I was missing that tone but didnt have the cash to grab a donor outright at the time.

That was a special amp. Im hoping he can work similar magic on my donor. At anyrate I trust his judgement. I'm already scheming on getting another Superlead to do after this next one.

I agree. I’ve had tons of mods over the years and this one definitely has something special going on.

I was talking to a buddy of mine, and we both agreed that 70’s Marshalls have always been the best sounding modded amps we’ve had. Something about the power sections, I guess, that makes them sound just right.

Theres so much much tolerance in tube amps in general, the voltage / tubes / caps / layout / grounding, its incredible. I spend a lot of time tweaking these and you really can't do that with production amps, for instance I used a 630pf / treble ( a250k ) in the tonestack of redplated's amp. Im glad you guys are noticing , it means you hear what I hear.

This amp is getting better every day. I keep getting different amazing tones out of it. Just for fun, I plugged in a Charvel Custom Shop with a Dimarzio Super Distortion. Instant VH1!

Again, I don’t learn these songs note for note. Just what I recall they sort of sound like.

Sounds great! What exactly is the mod? Is it Jose inspired? It sounds like 3 gain stages, cathode follower, , pre-tone stack master with diode clipping?

Curious what the mod foundation is? I'm only going by what I hear in the clips. If it is with clipping, how much gain does it have without clipping; or is it a fixed clipper circuit, if at all?

Most Joses are lower gain without clipping. I assume there is no tube x added for another stage, or the cathode follower is rewired for four stages? Thanks. Just want to understand what you are doing? Everyone who has gotten one seems very happy.

Honestly I've never done two amps alike, Im using the pre ts for this mod but you can use different styles of clipping in the pre and power section to balance the circuit.

Sounds killer. Let me know when you do another like this. This is the tone that I love.

All of my latest amps have this quality, it’s where I end up, the rest is up to you

Jeremy this clip is savage, thank you!

Thanks Shea!

So much fun to play this amp. This is the first amp that I actually play more than tweaking knobs and switches. All the frequencies just sit in the right places.

Yep, got mine back in December and now when I fire up both the C+ Coliseum and 2204, I spend most of my time with the 2204. It's that good. All I had to do to match the tone in the vids, was to drop my mids a bit more than usual. Such an easy amp to play, with all that saturated usable gain.

Damn that Super Distortion sounds juicy on that Charvel! Is it a hardtail or tremolo equipped Charvel?

Might have to put a SD on my next partscaster build..

Definitely hard to go wrong with a Super Distortion and a Charvel. It does sound great. Has a nice compression to it.

The guitar has a vintage trem that’s set more for hard tail, that’s why I manually detuned the low E. I picked this one up from psychodave recently. I’ll likely have a Floyd added by Lee at GMW. He’s about 15 minutes away from me.

That configuration is the exact same setup I use (super d / marshall branded v30s ) Both of these are known to have a mid boost, when you uploaded that last clip it sounded very real to me because thats what I heard when the amp was completed.

Man that's a sweet axe, i might have to get a black super strat myself. Thinking about getting a pacer/baretta style body from KNE and sending it to GMW for coating. :D

Do you have intention to have you own amplifier brand line or a Black Sun with a footswitchable clean or simple clean channel?

Psychodave actually had this one sprayed by Lee. It used to be white. Legit paint job, looks great.
