NAD: Wizard 100w MCII - video added

I love the jubilee.. I sold off my SLO after getting a 2555. I just like that thing that marshall does! I'm just using vintage 30's in that cabinet...I play with a loud drummer and the V30's just pump loud and clean.

Funny..that was my exact dilemma. Had my 2nd SLO but was contemplating selling and grabbing another Jube..which is exactly what I did. Grabbed a little combo and had cash left over. Haven't played the 100 watter but for some reason I like the combo tone just a bit better than the 2550 heads. The combos don't have a choke..maybe that's the tonal difference? I run a 79 cab with G12 65s and another cab with V30s. Hook them both up and that combo sounds huge. But I still hope to grab a Wizard someday!

I didnt realize that they didnt use a choke on the combos? Is it located inside the chassis maybe? The reissues are shipping this month!!

The 2554 1x12 combo has a resistor in place of a choke...the chassis is too small for a choke. Its the same size as those 4203 half tube/solid state 1x12 combos from the 80s...small package but potent. The new reissues have a choke I'm sure...

Sounds way different than my MC with the A transformer.

^^I have two M/C's with the A transformer and two with the C.... at first I really didnt hear much difference. After playing through one amp for an extended period of time I plugged into one with the different transformer and I did hear a difference. The A has more mids and less bottom than the C. I still sound like me when I play through either lol

Great thread. I have a 100W MCII and it's hands down the best amp I've ever owned/played. Other amps do cool things, but they don't touch the Wizard. Not only that, but it's extremely versitle. People equate it with straight up in your face rock tones, but it can do the more polite stiff with single coils as well.

They just have a presence that can't be matched, especially in a live setting. I've been through a ton of boutique amps (mostly Marshall variants), and nothing touches the Wizard.

they are hard to beat, played mine last night in the rhythm channel with the boost engaged and the Bogner Wessex
sounds fantastic, with the boost off it's blues heaven

I started off with an old Metal 100 that Rick tweaked and updated for me. After that he built this MC with some of the features of the Metal. He wanted me to swap the OT from what came in it and asked me what I was looking for. It was funny he asked it I wanted VH tone. I laughed and said no. He sent me the A and I put it in. I've had this amp probably 10 years now.

If the C has more bottom than the A that must be nuts! My bass knob never goes past 4 now.

Thats some interesting info... yes, its a slight bit more bottom but I think thats because of the mid range difference? the C is definitely more of the VH thing for sure. I think I'm running the bass on 1 oclock for both the A and C and it sounds great. that clip is TV volume so its not the best..it really balances out the frequencies and sustains when I have the master on 2.5.

It's unfortunate for most people interested in a Wizard that they can't try one. I was lucky in that I have a dealer near my home and could go and play/hear one in person before buying. That being said, you'll never read a negative review of a Wizard. They may not be for everyone, but everyone agrees they are amazing. If you are into the Marshall and hot-rodded Marshall tones, there really isn't a better amp made.

Agree with you... its too bad that a number of people at TGP turn their noses because a few of the forum "celebrities" came back from the new york amp show in 2009 complaining their pussies hurt over the volume in the wizard room. Those few completely controlled the perception of these amps over there ...lol If it said germino on it they would be trying to have sex with it.

No doubt. What's hilarious to me is the love those guys show Germino and the like. Yeah, they do a great job with neat wiring, quality parts, and attention to historical detail. Still, at the end of the day the amps are single channel Marshall CLONES. Now, they are great amps, but they aren't anything special to me. I built my own Plexi for a fraction of the cost of one of those clones using all the same high quality parts and I'd put it up against any of the Marshall clone makers out there. It's not like putting one of those amps together is a big secret.

When you open up a Wizard and compare it to a Germino, it's just no comparison. Germino's and the like are built very well, but Wizard amps are on another level entirely. Plus, the MCII will do pretty much all the tones a Plexi will do and that's not even scratching the surface.

I had an MC a few years back and considered grabbing an MC II some day. We'll see.

MCII best amp in my collection and I have some nice ones. All are good, but not like the MCII, different class. Save your money and make a change. The reaction when plugging and playing it is like Scott Ians, why did I waste my time on some other products..unless a collector.

No one knows? I found a TGP thread discussing Wizard amplifiers... Interesting opinions. It appears the Vintage Classic is quite popular, but I can't help but wonder if differences in opinion have anything to do with the available transformer options?
