I'll second Colma from Buckethead. I'd place this album near the top of my favorite instrumental/guitar albums. "Machete" and "Big Sur Moon" from this album are in my top ten most played on my iTunes.

I've been listening to a couple more well known guys:

Paul Gilbert - Silence Followed by a Deafening Roar
Tony MacAlpine - Maximum Security
Greg Koch - The Grip

The Grip is insane. He never seems to run out of ideas. I love that song he does with the real heavy rhythm and the overdone Albert King licks on top. I especially like the solo on Spanish Castle Magic.

Michael Lee Firkins

Richie Kotzen

Blues Saraceno

Steffen Schackinger

Anyone have Glenn Tiptons' solo album? Always thought that could be a bit of a dark horse?

Marc Bonilla - EE Ticket

One of the best guitar oriented instrumental CD's I've ever heard.

He's a great player but it's not your typical masturbatory shred fest - the guy really writes catchy hooks that weave into each other seamlessly. The whole album is like a roller coaster ride. Very cool. "American Matador' is great also but EE ticket is the one to get if you can find it.

EE Ticket came to mind the moment that I saw this thread title...great album! I would also recommend Chris Poland's Return to Metalopolis.

The new Jeff Loomis album has some cool moments, but I haven't given it much time yet.

Lots of great suggestions. I've been liking most of the stuff all you guys have mentioned so far that I could find.

Here's some that haven't been said that I like a lot...

CJ Grimmark - Grimmark

Kind of reminds me of a mix of Mattias Eklundh and Steve Vai, only tuned lower with more riffs and isn't instrumental. The focus is definitely on the guitar playing though.

Daita - Euphony

One of the most famous Japanese guitarists. Very cool style and great phrasing.

Michael Schenker - Adventures Of The Imagination

Definitely not a lesser known player, but I'd say that album is really underrated. I think it's some of his best work. Really melodic and the songs are very cool.

If you can find any Fourth Estate, they are worth checking out. Great guitar playing by Dave Beegle. Great tone too! He's the guy who invented the Transperformance Tuning System.

I really like that Gary Hoey album. Are all of his other albums similar or as good?

I'm not a big fan of Buckethead. His playing never did much for me.

No Boundaries by MAB

forget about Nitro, and his hair, and all the other shit - its really a great instrumental shred album

Karl Sanders (from NILE ) Saurian Meditation album. egyptian accoustic guitar stuff... theres some shred thrown in that also.

Mathieu marcotte from Augury has a cool project also, called Humanoid (album is Remembering Universe) it's mostly "classical" guitar.

IMO the BEST progressive instrumental album ever is Sublimation by CANVAS SOLARIS. very cool vibe and brilliant songwritting.
