What about bands influenced by the 80's?

I vote for Edguy...

my friend keeps trying to convince me that TOOL and APC are just the cats ass.

sorry, i got tired of that approach during the "grunge" period that took over.
you know, stare at the floor and whine/drone on about your political views and nonsensical shit while the guitar player pulls your puppett strings behind the scenes.

oh, wait, that sounds like every band i've ever seen!

Cacophony!

Speed Metal Symphony & Go Off are mindblowing

Marty Friedman has such a unique exotic flare, distinct from other shredders
His apprentice Jason Becker was an arpeggio master. Rumor is he would play the tapping section of Eruption...with One Hand. In the other hand- a Yo Yo! Oh yea, he was 17 at the time!

Added Bonus: the singer is growly, not hi pitched and whiny like the contemporaries

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the Scorpions or Skid Row. Sure they're popular bands, but as far as the scorps go, their Blackout and Love at First Sting are classics from start to finish. Matthias Jabs doesn't get much notariety these days, but he was a perfect fit for the band.

As far as Skid Row...skip past their hits and take a listen to some of the other stuff on their first two albums. Not exactly shreddy type guitars but definitely some stuff worth cranking up. In particular, their Subhuman Race album kicks all kind of ass and was too heavy for the radio stations expecting ballads and hair spray.

Not actually from the 80's but Steel Panther's "Feel the Steel" is one of the best hair albums ever!

Seriously, they don't get enough credit. They're ridiculously good. Those of you into the heavier 80s metal kinds stuff should dig 'em:

Oh My God, I love this shit. Never heard of them before but they're awesome. The YT vids of them live in the studio are ridiculous. The bass player just rips in those vids and everyone is on it. Great sound.

It doesn't get much more 80's than old school Pantera! These guys were rock gods here in DFW long before they went heavy metal. Darrel's guitar work was much shreddier in the old days.

Old Pantera FTW. Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle are great albums.
