Same RT member as in the above video comparing an SLO to a BE100.

I found another cool comparison vid in a mix

Definitely preferred the SLO in the AIC clip. Better balance and immediacy. The JJ sounded like the low end was a little separate from the rest of the sound.

Only have to get on the waiting list for like 5 years or something ?

Come on guys ... what's the hold up??? place your order
Yo he builds a killer amp, & probably works like 3 different jobs.. or does the job of 3 men.. 🤔 5 years is crazy.. Just wait for one of his buyers to get gassed on the last 50 yards then swoop in & snatch that fucker.

You can buy ones in wild .im not selling but ive seen members selling them back and forth

HotRod 100+ is almost identical to Avenger 100. If the price is right, I'd get it in an heartbeat.

Consider a synergy 20IR with. slo 2 module, pretty damn cool, I had many 100W original slo's glorious amps that cant be played at anything but concert volumes to sound right, slo30 is super cool

Are any of the Soldano's good for high gain metal or mainly just 80s stuff?

Alright, I have way too much gear, I'll never be able to play it all. Most of my guitars are in the garage in their cases and rarely see the light of day. All of my amps are in storage; my Budda Superdrive 45 and 80, Landry Lexi, Morris XS III, Peavey Rockmaster, and my Marshall and Peavey power amps. I don't even get to play my Helix Rack I bought right before I had to put all this stuff in storage and move. I sold my MGL 7 or 8 months ago (wished I hadn't). So, obviously I don't need anymore amps....but there's a somewhat local'ish guy with a Hot Rod 100+ for sale for what seems like a pretty good price.

Should I be wise and let someone else get this one, or make another stupid financial decision and buy it so someone else doesn't get to have it? lol I've never played one, but c'mon, it's an old school Soldano.

I didn't have to read this post to know the answer to the title: Yes. Yes you do.

If you have to ask the question, you already know the right answer.

Now, be decisive.

If you've never had a SLO, yes you do need one or at least to spend some time with one. Not a Hot Rod. Not a Decatone. The real deal.

This is way too wide of a question because soldano has put out a million amps and varations of them, but

I'm going to talk about the SLO first. (this includes the avenger which is just the lead channel in a one channel amp, and the decatone which is the clean and lead of an SLO with the HR crunch channel)

IMO they can do both, but they are best for the 80s stuff.

They especially excel at lead tones: they are really expressive and liquid if you have good technique. If you can't play lead guitar you might end up one of the "SLOs are overrated" people.

They can also do the heavy chugga chugga but it isn't their forte. You need to use the crunch channel with a boost, or turn the gain down below 5-6 on the lead channel and turn the master volume up or else its a loose, farty mess for that style of playing. If you want satisfying chugging in your bedroom it's not going to deliver it.

It also is a little picky about speakers.

As far as the other main amps, like the hotrods, they are literally just modded 2203/2204s with an added gain stage, so if you like 2203s 2204s you'll probably like them. Do you think a 2203 can do high gain metal?

The other "type" of amp that soldano does is the astroverb, which is like their version of a fender amp with a soldano style lead channel bolted on. They sound great clean, and the gain channel suffers a little for it, but is still quite good. I would say this is the only amp series they do that can't really do "high gain metal" but idk I haven't played the new astroverb.

All of the distortion pedals (GTO to modern SLO distortion) and the rack pres, they all are varying shades between the main food groups.

I avoided a Soldano for years because I thought it wasn't what I wanted.
Boy was I ever wrong. I have 2 of them now (SLO-100R and X88-IR) and have never been happier.
It is the amp that I love playing through the most.

Can the X88-IR do SLO-100 tones or does it have its own flavor all together?

Both the X88 and X88-IR are closely related. There's extra output (and input on your poweramp) buffering that probably isn't 100% the same as the current SLO FX loop (or the old one for that matter). The fundamental gain stages and EQ are the same though I believe.

I think some people consider the pre-BAD SLO a little rawer than the X88/SM100R but I've used SLOs and I'm happy with the X88IR/SM100R pairing overall.

Just played a new one today and it really is such a great rock amp. Was having no trouble with a Les Paul having a tight, chunky gain sound on the lead channel. Pre at 4, was plenty of gain. A simple boost would put it in even more but stay tight. Sounds great at low volume, just use the depth to fill it out a little for quieter stuff. I really love the gain range on the normal channel set to crunch. I know it’s mainly the loop they changed but if BAD did any tweaks to the sound, they sound great.
It’s a shame they’re 4K now because used prices are still no bueno. But sure would like to have one, one day.

HR100+ is a formidable, versarile amp, with some quirks.

NO, shouldn't grab it.

OP: I have lots of amps and guitars that I never get to play, should I get another?
RT: Duh, do it.

Also RT: Soldano doesn't do this great. Soldano can do anything. Flipped it fast. Favorite amp.

Either pass, or add it to the collection in storage. Probably not worth it.

I think we obviously have two camps here. The enablers & the responsible realist….

I prefer to responsibly enable people to make potentially poor decisions that might make them happy.:cheers2:

I'm usually the devil on your shoulder. Just ask @scottosan about his recent purchase, and how I failed to talk him off the ledge. Actually quite the opposite. But in this case, why add a Soldano to a storage room?
