Im not a fan of the band but I never understood how critical people were about labrie.. I always thought that he was a good fit

On the past few albums he's been terrible. They cover up his voice with effects when he tries to sing over the heavy parts. And if they want to get heavier, then they should just get a different singer. I would love to hear them do an album with the guy from Symphony X, but as we know that won't happen.

Train Of Thought was a pretty heavy album but the vocals just killed some of the songs.

Total +1, ESPECIALLY on the Live at the Budokan DVD. His voice was just flat out bad for most of it. Russell Allan would be AWESOME with DT though.

I just feel like they're dumbing down their music sooooo much just for the sake of having JLB and lyrics. I just wish they would do Liquid Tension Experiment full time.

I'll check it out as I have every release of theirs, but as other "older" fans (such as myself) have said, Labrie kills it for me. Too bad, as I thought he was a great singer on I&W's. I've later found out that Charlie wrote the melodies for the majority of the songs, so maybe that's why it worked so well.

I still think that they rush records too much. The first few releases, which are the only ones worth a damn, were written over the course of a few years a piece. The new ones have all been written in the studio and it shows. There are interesting moments, but the transitions and development isn't there.

I will say that Forsaken off of the last release was the closest that they've come to recapturing the sound of Awake era stuff. It's very melodic and there isn't a great amount of over playing, I hope that they keep it up on the new one. The shredding is great, when it is done in fleeting to moments.

+1 So true ! Though SFAM pt. 2 (the last good one IMO) was also written over a long period. When they did the commercial Falling into Infinity, Metropolis pt. 2 was a 25 minute piece shelved for later. When it came time for the next album they expanded on it, so they had alot of time to conceive and fully realize it.

I think the band is great as it is. No need to change anything IMO. Either you appreciate their work as artists or you don't. To bitch and moan about it is futile. Let them evolve, grow, change, (in some peoples eyes fail) as a band on their own terms. Chew the meat, spit out the bones and keep smiling people.

It will be interesting to see how it is. Last album I have is Train of Thought. I am a pretty new DT fan, I had never even heard of them until 3 or 4 years ago.

I just hope JP playing is expressive like the first couple of albums and not so much shreading like TOT....

I agree with Terry. Used to be a fanboy but am evolving in my tastes a bit. Either way, I like them for what they do and have no complaints. I like each era for what it is.

BTW,

James had a vocal injury durin the Awake time period. His voice has never been the same. Maybe that is why most like the vocals from I&W and Awake best. I think he fits the band and like him regardless of achieving vocal perfection. No biggie here.

It seems to me that by including the instrumental mixes DT is acknowledging that there are a lot of folks that have an issue with Labrie's vocals. I wonder why they don't just consider a different singer.

im not sure either. theres only a few bands i just cant listen to cause of the singer, and dream theater is one of them. you think the guy would just quit, i know i would if my band was releasing the album without lyrics
