I like some of their guitar work. That type of singing completely makes it unlistenable for me though.

huh? clean rock singing? what DO you like? cookie monster growls?

Well I do like the occasional growl, but I often look for aggressive or dramatic vocals. This sounds to me too uplifting or pop-like if you will. Distracts me from the music. But that's to my ears.

Not terrible, but sounds very generic and very chorus-focused.

Sorry for bumping this, but I finally had a chance to pick up the album and holy hell it's killer. I knew a few don't dig it, but damn the tones on this are the best yet in my opinion, so saturated with a bit of fuzz and pretty damn clear, glad it's at a heavy tuning, sounds like C but even B at times. That Friedman is madness. If you haven't listen to it on your headphones (listening to High Road at this moment),damn. For me this one takes the best parts of Hunter and Crack the Sky but still has a heavy quality of Blood Mountain. My favorite as near the end of the record they get into a bitch'n Neurosis feel. Great album.

Agreed. I didn't like it much at first but it has really grown on me. Loved Leviathan and Blood Mountain but they lost me with Crake and Hunter. This new one is becoming one of my favorites for sure. They use AGCFAD tuning on High Road and some others I think, cool stuff.

Oh yea man for sure Blood Mountain and Leviathan, Remission was a game changer for me, but I really dug the feel on Crack the Sky because ... well for me goes into that Pink Floyd feel. Kinda like what Kylesa is doing. Baroness made to big of a jump with Green/Yellow, but Mastodon eased into a transition very well. Some songs on Hunter grew on to me, but the overall wasn't my favorite. I expect the next one will be heavier in Leviathan territory.

I pretty much dig OMRTS :rawk:

I think a lot of tuning or at least some of the tuning on this album was DGCFAD. One song was open G tuning I heard.

C is nothing for these guys - they are often in ACGFAD.

+1

But dudes, how do you NOT dig this song?

+it is a fun riff to play

I want to like this band because I appreciate their unique sound and approach in an ocean of cookie cutter mediocrity but they just don't do it for me. A little too busy with some good parts here and there but never a strong cohesive piece. I dug Leviathan for a while when it came out but the production was tiresome on the ears. It seems on the last few, every time they think there laying down a heavy or epic riff, it's just not that heavy or all that epic and their "noodley" style really wears on me after a while (less is more). I do dig all the singers though.

I only really dig Chimes and High Road on this record. Huge fan of Mastodon, but for me, this is their worst record by far.
